Hi All,

Just wanted to tell my sad news.

Heard one of my cats crying and yowling yesterday evening so I rushed out thinking two cats were fighting. A dog (Jack Russell) had got hold of her, they were completely locked together, head to toe. I yelled but the dog carried on biting her so I just instintivly put my hands between them, the dog let her go but my cat was still in 'attack mode' and started biting me.

The cat was in a terrible state, bleeding from a large wound in her belly, she couldn't walk and her face was just smashed in. By the time we got her to the vets she'd gone into shock and was stone cold, her breathing laboured, vet said her spine had been completely crushed. She died a few minutes later.

I had to go to A&E, on antibiotics and my left hand is bandaged up, have to go back in 48 hrs to have the wounds cleaned and dressed again.

This morning I phoned the dog warden, police, council, no ones bothered about a cat though. Now worried the dog might come back, I have two other cats.

Going to bury her later, what a sad terrible way for her to die. RIP Michy x

Oh I am so so sorry. Your poor cat.

I hope you can find out who the dog belongs to? Did you notice if it had a collar or tag on it?
Whatever it shouldn't have been roaming off lead. I'm surprised the dog warden wasn't interested?
Have you tried reporting the incident to the RSPCA? I can see why you are worried about your other cats.
    Take care,

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. You did all you could to help her and i'm sure she knew that. I hope they find out who the dog belongs to so that he can return home before it's a child next time.
  • So sorry for your loss :(

This dog needs to be caught and the owner (if there is one) prosecuted. It could have been a child he got. Just imagine!

    that is a shame,
i hope you killed the dog 'by accident'. i have 2 cats and it would cross my mind.

I'm sure the cats owner was more concerned about rushing her cat to the vet rather than killing the dog!!
Besides, its not the dog's fault, its the fault of the owner who allowed it to run free.

Phond the RSPCA, not interested! Don't know if it had a collar on, it ran off straight away. Apparently my neighbour has called the dog warden out twice to pick up this dog, each time the dogs been impounded but the owners go and pick it up again. We do know where the owners live, OH said he might go round there, really don't think thats a good idea though.
Least we reported it to the police and the hospital and the vets has a record of it.

    Thanks for everyones kind words.

I wouldn't really want anything bad to happen to the dog (I love dogs). Judging by the state of my hand am sure the dog must have a few wounds also. I just wish the owners would act responsibly and make sure that the dog is kenneled properly so it doesn't keep escaping. Like others have said it could be a child next time. I think the owners couldn't care less.

The dog killing your cat is a private matter between you and the dog owner to sort out. If your cat killed my budgie I wouldn't expect the cat to be put to sleep and you prosecuted. I would work out your financial loss (vet fees etc...) and present the dog owner if you can trace them with a bill. If they refuse to pay the bill you could consider taking legal action agasint them to get the money you feel owed. If you go through the small claims court it is very low cost.
If the dog was straying then the Dog Warden can warn the owner but they won't get involved with the dog killing the cat.
Its very diffcult to catch stray dogs because once the Dog Warden gets there the dog is normally somewhere else. If a stray dog is caught and secured in a garden then the Dog Warden can collect it.
While its very sad over your cat just because a dog kills a cat doesn't mean its "dangerous". Should cats who kill birds be put to sleep and their owners prosecuted? A dog killing a cat does not mean it will go for a person. Investigations into illegal dog fighting show that dog owners can handle their dog during a fight because while the dog will kill another dog it wouldn't harm another human.
Your best bet is to find out who the dog belongs to and present them for a bill for your dead cat. At the very least they hopefully will feel guilty about the cat and ensure they keep their dog under control.

Im so sorry for your loss. You poor thing what a horrible thing to experience.

I had a jack russell come on my land and try to attack my cat luckily my screaming alerted a neighbour who managed to get between my cat and the dog and scared the dog away. I dont know what would have happend if she hadnt of been stood where she was.

I was so scared and annoyed I screamed at the kids who had let the dog out that if it came on my land again I would' rip its head off!' Now obviously I didnt mean it but I was so scared at the time I probaly could have. The owner of the dog came and verbally abused me on my land in front of about 7 other witnesses. I gave as good as I got and told him that his dog on my land means my rules. Since this day the dog has always been on a lead.

Did the dog come on your land and kill your cat? I would be round the owners house telling htem you are considering what civil action you can take against them. Was the dog controlled? Was the dog supervised? Owners should be held responsible for the animals actions, dogs, cats, lizzards whatever.
  • Did the dog bite you, also??? If so surely a dangerous dog and a police matter??
