Im so sorry for your loss. You poor thing what a horrible thing to experience.

I had a jack russell come on my land and try to attack my cat luckily my screaming alerted a neighbour who managed to get between my cat and the dog and scared the dog away. I dont know what would have happend if she hadnt of been stood where she was.

I was so scared and annoyed I screamed at the kids who had let the dog out that if it came on my land again I would' rip its head off!' Now obviously I didnt mean it but I was so scared at the time I probaly could have. The owner of the dog came and verbally abused me on my land in front of about 7 other witnesses. I gave as good as I got and told him that his dog on my land means my rules. Since this day the dog has always been on a lead.

Did the dog come on your land and kill your cat? I would be round the owners house telling htem you are considering what civil action you can take against them. Was the dog controlled? Was the dog supervised? Owners should be held responsible for the animals actions, dogs, cats, lizzards whatever.

The dog is from the village about 1 mile away. By property sits on private land that is owned by someone else although I own the 'land' my house is on, if that makes sense. The attack happened in my garden. I'll have to think about the civil action route. I suppose I could at least say to them I'm considering it. It might scare them into looking after their dog properly.

Glad you stood up to the owners dog and your cat was ok.

Did the dog bite you, also??? If so surely a dangerous dog and a police matter??

I don't think it did. Its hard to tell which one inflicted bites although I think it was mainly my cat as she was attacking me as I picked her up and while I was holding her.

So sorry to hear this...how awful.

I wont let our cats go anywhere round the front of our house for fear of the road/dogs etc.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I love both Dogs & Cats & have 1 of each & if my Dog ever did this i'd be mortified & want to pay all Vet bills & private cremation if required. It sounds as though this Dog has terrible Owners as it's not the first time it's Strayed, I definitely think they should at least be paying Vet bills & be forced to keep their Dog on it's own turf. Maybe you could put a letter through stating what happened, I would say add pics but I imagine you didn't take any, I wouldn't have either! I'd send a letter & Vet bill. How frustrating nobody would help.

I think poor Cats don't get the legal protection they deserve, yes it's in a Dogs nature to kill them, but Dog Owners know this & should take steps to prevent it from happening, accidents happen but not repeatedly! Cats kill wildlife true but the wildlife aren't people's beloved Pets.

I'm so sad for the OP, her Cat & also the Dog for having incompetent Owners who obviously couldn't care less for it. Hope your hand will be ok x

I would go round there & god help the owner, because it IS their fault. They are allowing the dog to roam wild.

Why don't you pick the dog up & drop it at an animal shelter 50 miles away, they are not fit to have a dog.

    So sorry about your cat:grouphug:
  • Fritillary, just wanted to say how sorry I am about this - it must have been very usetting for you, and a sad end to your much loved pets life.

Its a rea shame the DW will not go ad have a word with them, as they are clearly letting the dog roam, and this breaking the law, by not having him under control. Sadly, there is little that can be done in law abut him killing your cat, but something should be done about his roaming. Personally, I would ring the DW again, and ask him if he would be prepared to contact the owners about his persistent roaming. As well as his attack on the cat, he could easily cause a road traffic accident whilst running loose.

I am too very sorry to hear about your cat, it must have been horrifying for you.

The owners of the dog are at fault. JRs are bred to hunt small furries and it is their nature to do so but its also the responsibility of the owners to ensure that he doesnt cause this sort of incident. Ive had JRs for decades and admit on one occasion one of mine caught a feral kitten in the garden. It broke our hearts and we then contacted a feral cat rescue to come and catch 20 cats and kittens in the neighbourhood. Hopefully they had a better life once the kittens were domesticated. The adults were neutered and then returned to the wild.

I definitely think you should send them a bill for the cats treatment and any meds you needed when you got involved in the incident. And speak to the Dog Warden as fc says because the poor dog is obviously not that cared for and could cause a traffic accident.

    RIP your little one. x

Oh for God's sake ... this poor poor OP has lost a pet in the most tragic circumstances and the last thing needed is people saying "go kill the dog" ...

OR inciting violence that could end up with a chat with the local constabulary ...

JR's will chase anything ... I have had them myself and they are NOT a dog to be let loose to roam the street.
As heartbreaking and as cruel as this sad tale is, the dog was behaving as a lot of dogs will do when they come face to face with a cat.

But to say go get this dog, knock it down, kill it blah blah blah is just big talk from little people.

YES we are all shocked and stunned for the poor OP ... God knows to lose any pet it heartbreaking enough but in these circumstances, it's doubly so.

But to mouth off like that is ridiculous, offensive and helps no one.

It is testament to what kind of pet lover the OP is when they said they wouldn't just condemn a dog the way a lot of the posters on here have.

The fault lies with the owner ... I have been in similar circumstances with a lady who owns an Afghan puppy that she sees fit to let roam.
It chased everything and everyone ... it actually bit two people but the police nor the RSPCA wanted to know.

(Perhaps if I'd said to the RSPCA that I had a BBC camera crew with me, they would have pulled out all the stops).

OP if you contact the Dog Warden, tell them what has happened and say a number of people are noticing this dog is loose and you are worried it will either cause an accident in the road (this seems to get them to take notice) then they usually say they will come driving round that area more often and keep an eye out for it.

The thing to do is phone them EVERY time you see it ... say, "I have just had to let you know, it's had another near miss," ... say whatever you need to, but they will eventually get tired of taking it in and may see it is being neglected and take it off the owner.
Hopefully it could end up with an owner who keeps it in and under control (ie on a lead) at all times when out ...

I kept phoning my Dog Warden and, credit to her, she came down my street daily, taking the dog in each time she saw it. Eventually, the owners got tired of going to get it back and it was rehomed. Good ending all round.

My heart goes out to you, it really does ...
