When I did a paper round in the 80's you had to be 15 or over to work on a Sunday.

THIS site has basic laws about working hours, and it also has ideas for other jobs.

My 15 year old nephew was delivering the local free paper. They were delivered to his house on a Wednesday morning and he could deliver them when he wanted as long as they were all out by Friday tea-time. He usually dawdled and did it over a couple of nights, but if he did it at a reasonable pace it only took 2 hours. For doing this he got £15 (so £7.50 an hour ) and EXTRA if he had leaflets to deliver with them!

I employ the little darlings to deliver the papers, it is a catch 22 situation IMO,
I have predominantely elderly people who require papers delivered, i cannot charge them nearly £1 delivery charge like some places could if they were delivering to younger people who are earning.

All the delivery money is passed on to the delivery person, so I think that is fair, but trying to find people to deliver is a nightmare:) I reckon pocket money must be quite high nowadays and i dont think my 1 year old is strong enough to carry a bag yet :p

My 13yo ds does 2 rounds - one on a Sunday morning and one with the local paper (Thursday evening). He does 20 odd papers each round and gets £11.50 a week. I think it's pretty good as he's getting over £6 an hour!
  • That amount is ridiculous i thought my son's pay was bad. He gets £17 for working 6 days. I would be saying something, after all look at the weather they are out in. My son has constant colds as he comes in soaked all the time.

My son does a morning paper round 7 days per week. On Saturday and Sunday the papers are delivered to the house as there are so many and so heavy and on those days he does them in three rounds. ON the weekday he crawls out of bed with a lot of help from me at 7.00am and gets back at about 7.45am.

He gets £17.50 per week At Xmas he probably made around £80 in tips and I reckon there are only about 20 to 25 houses on his round

Apart from the money one good thing to come out of this is that he has lost a stone in weight since starting and has become very fit. The round is up and down hills and he uses his bike. He will probably quit the round before his GCSEs start.

Oh yes, I forgot the tips! Not many from the 'free' paper, but when eldest was doing evening paper 6 days pw he got loads! Especially the year he delivered a christmas card to them all ... and another youngster I know needed a knee op so put a little note in with all the papers saying the papers might be late for a week as he was having surgery and paper shop would be using 'relief' (probably double rounds for someone!) and got 'get well soon' cards with tips in!

My son has constant colds too...but I think it's something to do with him being too stupid to wear his bl**y coat. Teenagers......arrrgghh

My son does paper round on Sunday for £6. Start 7am and back home around 8.15. Great tips at Christmas. Hubby and I had to take turns doing it when when he had his appendix out!
