    Hi,

I got my laptop on friday, really pleased with it, just a few things tho I have removed all the AOL, wanadoo, and general rubbish they put on it, but now when I start mine up it loads up to the windows page, then goes black for a split second and then is perfectly fine again, any ideas what has happened and does anyone else have the same problem?

  • Hi,
got my laptop yesterday. I am really pleased with it. However, can someone tell me how to go about upgrading the memory? Do I buy 512mb or 256 to add to the 256 already there? I know that probably sounds dumb but I have no technical know-how!!!!!!!!!!! Is it possible to install it myself - having no knowledge at all? The last thing is about wireless and broadband. What do I have to buy to go wireless and get broadband? I am confused about routers and modems! So many questions ( and probably unrelated to pupose of thread - sorry!)
    Thanks a lot,
    Jolene

for your ram, go to crucial.com, and it a step by step guide on there site so you get the right stuff, and if you use the code custumpc you get 4% off, so it will cost roughly £36 for 512mb, well worth it apprently.

And the wireless issue is another thing, I am trying to set mine up at the moment, so i don't know 100% what i am doing but I ordered a belkin router of off amazon for £28.50, my laptop has wifi built in so it is just a matter of following the setup cd the router comes with, i think

Have you got a broadband internet connection at the moment? If not go to https://www.madasafish.com and use them . They are v.good, I have just transferred to them and they are one of martins ecommendations.

As for the wirles/router thing, you basically need to buy one box which conections your dsl/router and your wifi(wireless) capability. Which one o you buy? If you are going for quality, something that you won't have to worry where you are in the house or garden when it comes down to good reception then go for buffalo, message me if you want a model number, otherwise go by recommendation for a cheap one that someone on the board has bought.

Hi, this is not unusual, nothing to worry about.

Hope you dumped the main offender (Norton/McAfee) in favour of AVG Free while you were doing the clearout!
  • Hi again and thankyou for the above replies - cant see how to do the thanking thing on the site :o ., but will look again. I need to get the 512mb memory then? Also on the topic of speeding up the computer - have got rid of aol and wannadoo which were already on there. however it is so slow still! Slower than my 6 year old prehistoric one upstairs! How can this be????????????? Off to look at the broadband link - and for the ram. Thanks tabath and rjtyrell for those.

You can add a stick of 256MB or 512MB, you can get 512MB from here for £25.49 inc VAT delivered. This works without any problems

There is a panel on the bottom of the laptop held by 3 small screws. You have to unscrew these and take the panel off. Use the correct size screwdriver or you'll ruin the screws.

Slot the memory in at 45 degrees and then push it down flat. Use the existing memory as a guide to show you if you have it sat in the slot properly. Hold the memory by the edges and try not to touch the contacts, earth yourself first to get rid of any static before opening it (touch the metal case of a computer, washing maching or a pipe). Once you have it slotted in, put the little cover back on and switch on, it'll tell you system memory changed, hit the button to continue.

I am on the basic/cheapest AOL broadband (and stuck with them for another 10 months on my contract  ) They dont support wireless and now im scared which router to buy, do i need to buy a new all in 1 modem/router etc. I would be greatful if anyone is on the lowest AOL broadband package and can advise me. :money:

McAfee seems to be the main memory suxer on these laptop, im still running mine with 256 (clean xp pro install)
Its running fine with half a dozen webpages open, outlook, messenger few other small apps.

    blah
  • should i get rid of mcafee then? What do you suggest as an alternative? Also have ordered 512 mb of memory. Does this mean the laptop will be 512+256 mb (768) in total then? Or will it be 512. Confusing!!!! Many thanks.
