Haha Joshua is six and we still have this when the mood takes him! Im sure youll be doing it for a long time yet! Oh yes OH likes to join in too sometimes with 'paper fights' But then he gets the pleasure of cleaning it all up

just a quick question for the ladies that are a bit further on had midwife app yesterday when midwife was checking babas position was so sore when she was checking to see if breech which she thinks is has anybody else found this never been sore before

DH thinks it's a girl, and a colleague does too and am kinda feeling I'd prefer a boy, even though I know it doesn't matter as long as it's healthy, and I know girls are great too (after all, we're all girls!)... I can't really explain where this feeling's coming from.

Part of me's afraid of all the indoctrination that girls get to dress in a certain way, behave in a certain way, do certain things and not others... not necessarily from their parents, but all the messages that are around us. I see people who would swear they treat boys and girls equally clearly not doing so - like encouraging boys to be active and get outdoors and mucky while fussing over girls (I have friends with daughters where the mother is very bright and successful but influences from nursery have counteracted that and the girls are obsessed with princesses and being pretty as if that's all girls can do ).

DH's parents seem to have expected less of his sister than of him - not in obvious ways but it's the subtle messages that she always needs help and things are harder for her and as a result she isn't v independent as an adult...

I don't know... I just don't have faith that girls are given an equal chance in life, even now. I know we have equality before the law etc etc, and many people say it's gone too far the other way (read any 'have your say' when there's some report about the gender pay gap on the BBC!) but it's not socially equal, not really.

I guess I want my daughter (if it is one) to be active, sporty, confident, enjoy the outdoors, not be fussy or prissy... but at the same time I know you can't make your kids what you want them to be! So am feeling very torn. I know I'd be kinda disappointed if all she wanted to do was ballet and horses like the stereotype and at the same time I know that's not right to be disappointed!

I've always liked it when I could bust stereotypes, like being able to read maps, parallel park and play footy ... maybe am afraid of what it'd be like to be a mother to a daughter than conforms?

I don't know whether any of this rambling makes sense - sorry - just hoping someone can give me some perspective.

I read some research a while ago that said that no matter what upbringing they have, all children are genetically programmed to have these gender differences, which is hwy all girls go through a pink and sparkly phase and all boys go through the guns phase.

So I wouldn;t worry too much.

I loved pink when I was smaller and was very girly - didn;t even wear trousers till I was about 14 - but I can read maps, reverse park, drive better than OH and am pretty masculine in a lot of respects.

I'll get myself better and at some point we'll try again and I'll come back here (though I expect more cautiously). In the meantime I may lurk a bit, it was only just over a week ago that I first came on here but I'm interested and want to see how you all get on and see some of your lovely pictures.

Hope everyone is well, I don't know what you've all been up to over the past couple of days so I'll send some general (((hugs))) for anyone who wants them and labour vibes for those in need.

I am not happy to have a stretch and sweep yet either as they dont perform it at the surgery I have to go over to the hospital where my community midwifes are based which is not even the hospital I am giving birth at. I would rather hold out and be admitted to the DAU at my chosen hospital as the midwifes are lovely there.

Its early days at the moment and I dont know why they feel the need to pressure you as soon as you reach your due date. They seemed offended when I said I didnt want the stretch and sweep.

Also as I was using ovulation tests to conceive I do believe my due date isnt until the 15th anyway.

They are always so keen to stop you 'going over'! Stick to your guns - I have no intention of being induced until I've hit at least 42 weeks, barring medical emergencies, and know of lots of women who have gone to that gestation and had natural births with no trouble.

If you need some info to help you stand your ground, there is another forum I go on I can tell you about (not sure if I'm allowed to post address but PM me for it).
