I think jacks right in his assumption
You need to physically MOVE the cd/dvd drive to 1st place in BIOS ~ not just place the curser over it

hello people! Hurrah...we have a result! I tried all of the above and couldnt get it to go past the screen so have restored factory settings and now effectively have a clean laptop. Its gutting to have lost so much data but tbh just relieved that I didnt have to buy a new one!
I am really worried that I may have to go through that again so can anyone recc a good (and not necc free) virus/kill the bastewards thing to protect my computer as much as I can without cocking up systems in the process (ie like I did last year with mcafee...)..
Most of all though a massive, massive thank you both for hanging in there with a computer dunce and for being so patient...if either of you are in the area let me know and I'll but a pint!
Going to switch off as dont want nasty viruses coming while I'm unprotected ...insert dodgy smiley!
Erik you didnt asnwer the red dwarf ?!!

Aviras best free one you can have (AVG is awful). So id hazard a guess you probably ALLOWED something onto your computer (Or it never installed properly in the 1st place)

But I also suggest Malwarebytes, Superanti spyware and Spybot as extra scanners (And spybots immunise feature)

And for browsing I would suggest FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin ~

    Download FIREFOX
    http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

    NOSCRIPT
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

NOSCRIPT works by blocking ALL website scripts (Which is how dodgy websites infect your computer ~ the easiest way to catch a virus after downloading). So you need to UNLOCK all websites you use for them to work properly (Like this one for example)
It also prevents 'page hijacking' (clicking to goto a BANK page for example and being redirected to a BOGUS page which would give scammers your login details!)
I personally set it so that it DOESNT show messages about blocked scripts. Then all you need to do is use common sense. Think to yourself 'does the site work ok'? If so it doesnt need touching. But if you wanted to watch a video on youtube say, youd need to unlock parts of it. Look bottom right, If theres ANY red on the 'S' symbol, then something is being blocked.

(You will also need the other addons like FLASH etc)

Aviras fine as the main anti virus (Pretty much equal to Kasperskys)

Malwarebytes, SAS and spybot you simply update and scan with (And IMMUNISE with spybot which prevents specific popups etc). Id advise using Malwarebytes at the very least (No matter WHICH av you decide to go for)

Firefox 'patches' itself a lot quicker than internet explorer (When 'holes' are found in its security). Noscript as ive already explained will prevent online virus attacks and redirects
