If bios is where you get the option to open safe mode etc I get that screen but then when you try to open in safe mode (or any other mode) it looks like starting but flashes window screen and then goes back to the start again...doesent matter which mode you try to open in it wont get past that!
Tried last night to reset to factory settings (with instructions from acer who were helpful) but it wouldnt even allow me to do that!
    Any ideas?
Re being infected I dont know for a fact that it was just assumed it was because it didnt work but apparently a bluescreen error can be the hard drive but dont know how to get it to stop on the blue page to read the error IYKWIM!!

no ~ safe mode and bios are 2 entirely different things
When you first power up there should be a quick flash of a screen to tell you what to hit to get bios up. But if F8 brings up the safe mode then DEL should bring up bios

And I think you missunderstand completely. Once bios is set to BOOT FROM A DISC then you simply insert the disc I asked for you to create and THAT will load ~ NOT windows (Meaning it 'should' work)

ISOM - if you can get into the Safe Mode selection screen, you can get into the BIOS...it's just identifying WHICH key will get you there once you've powered on........DEl, F2, F10 are some common ones...what make/model of lappy is it, might give us a clue...

edit: ooops, sorry RiK, you posted as I was typing..:)

Not something ive ever tried personally and even if you COULD make a bootable pen drive ive no clue how to get the rescue program onto it and boot

Creating a bootable disc is VERY easy (Using a computer that works of course :))

ok...I have managed to get into bios (F2) and tried to set it to start dvd first to run the downloaded disk I made at work but its still going through the cycle of shut down/normal etc and then shut down again...?
Could someone give me step by step/idiot proof instructions on what to do when in Bios please...
    Many thanks!

You need to set the cd/dvd drive to boot 1st then you need to SAVE the settings before you exit Bios (usually F10 I think)

Put the disc youve CREATED in the drive and bootup. PRESS ANY KEY when it tries to boot from disc

ok here is what I am doing...
    shut down computer
Restart and press F2 to enter bios
Enter bios and use arrow to ge to boot
    Go down to cd-rom/harddrive
Press F10 to save and exit
As soon as the machine powers up...its just going back to the "we apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start sucessfully......start normally/safe with networking/safe/safe with command promt/last known good config...
If I try pressing keys when it starts up it just beeps at me and goes back to the "we apologise..." screen...
Have tried all at one point or another with no joy.
Just dont get what I'm doing wrong.....

ISOM - when you're in the BIOS, and you go down to the cdrom drive, you usually need to press another key (poss F5 or F6, it tells you either along the bottom of or down the side of the screen) to actually move it up the boot order list to the top BEFORE you save & exit....that should sort you out..good luck :)
