Gonna stick my head above the parapet and say... play games.
Now I know a lot of the more popular games come out for mac, but the mac versions don't get reduced like PC versions do and I usually buy new games (mainly rpgs) about a month after release when they get reduced.
My OH got a macbook about 4 years ago, won't go back to pc and is constantly hounding me to get rid of the PC, and I would too if it weren't for the games...
His mantra whenever I swear at the PC cos the crappy M$ software has chosen to do the exact opposite of what I wanted it to is "I'll buy you a mac.. right now.. which one do you want":rotfl: Grrrrr.

Oh and I don't think you can upgrade them as easily (if at all?) as PCs - new graphics card etc.

This is true I guess, though, you can run Windows on a Mac if you want to, so it's partly moot. You can also run some Windows games without even installing Windows using CrossOver Games.

As for upgrading, if you want to tinker with your computer, a Mac isn't for you (apart from maybe a Mac Pro). You're pretty much limited to upgrading the HDD and the RAM.

Oh what the hell, I'll actually post a bit of an opinion.

I really don't give a hoot about computers these days.

I've switched to playing games on the 360, which doesn't leave me with any kind of hardware requirements for my PC at all, really. I need to type documents, do email, the odd bit of coding - either of which I could do on a PC or a mac (though I never would ;)) - So, only thing that actually matters to me either way is the price. Hence, mac loses.

Well you see that's fair enough. You can buy PCs for cheaper than you can buy Macs. I don't think anyone disagrees with that.

You can also buy PCs that are more expensive than Macs; Dell, HP and Sony all make more expensive models.

Though, I will say that the current Mac I have is three years old, and is running the latest version of Mac OS X, and it'll be running the newest version when it's released later this year. I fully expect to get another three years out of it before I even have to think about replacing it, and at that point, if I choose to sell it, I'll still get a good price for it, whether it's working or not.

The Mac I had before was purchased in 1999, and it's still working and running Mac OS X quite happily. I know people who think nothing of spending £300 on a PC that lasts for 18 months, so I think I'm not doing too badly, money-wise.

Like you though, I also have an Xbox 360 for playing games. :)

No argument from me that the price of Mac games is pretty extortionate. With the exception of those where the one disc plays on both systems (e.g. Football Manager series), the prices don't drop, and that does irritate me a little.

That said, the games point is now moot because Macs now come with Bootcamp packaged in with it, with allows you to run Windows on your Mac. In fact, with the latest updates of Parallel and VM Fusion now supporting 3-D graphics, you can actually run PC games in a window on your Mac (or full screen if you prefer) without having to restart and load Windows at all.

    To the OP.
Ignore (almost) all that has been said. Go to the apple shop and try one out for yourself, bear in mind it's the salesperson's job to sell you the product, but if it "ticks all the boxes" seriously consider it, We all have our opinions, and you're not really gonna get an unbiased one (I'm a PC user), so try one for yourself...then you can have your own opinion, and then you can tell us.

The basic, new model, Mac Mini is reasonably priced and quite easy to move around the house, compared to a PC tower.
Good Monitors can be found quite cheap now and if the Monitor breaks it can be replaced easier and cheaper than the integrated one in the more expensive iMac.

Can anyone help me with my problem with Mac???!!! Have a Mac here that daughter used to use which both myself and son would like to adopt. However, unable to load certain progs as daughter put a password on as an administrator when she first had it. She now has no idea what the password is and we cannot add another adminstrator without the password!! Cannot find any original discs to do a complete reinstall to factory settings. Is there a solution for this?

You need to put the reinstall DVD in. Double click it, and then click the restart button. Your Mac will now restart and boot from the disk.

Then, once it's loaded, keep clicking next until you get a menu bar at the top (don't go too far or else you'll start reinstalling everything!).

Then, go to the Utilities menu, and there should be an option for resetting the password.

ETA: Whoops, just noticed you said you can't find any of the disks that came with it!

See my post on the next page.

Sorry :D, felt the need to post, while I know it does get over the games issue...
you are suggesting that someone buys a Mac (for all the reasons one would do so) and then installs windows... why would you want to do that:o ? You dont buy a performance car and then put retreads on it or run it on low octane fuel. Or is windows somehow more reliable on a Mac then?
I thought the whole point of a Mac was the reliability and predictability of the machine and it's OS. Or have I been mislead?

    It's only a game

Oh I remember the days I felt that way - dark times :D

"beat" is all a bit relative, really. On the 360, everyone's on dual analogues (well, mostly), so all at an equal disadvantage, so it makes no difference, really.

Added to that the superior online gaming, the improved load times (especially for the console itself), playing games on your big fat telly...and, for most people, removing the only application that makes them need a desktop rather than a laptop - and, most importantly, the assurance that you're gonna be getting new games on that platform for the next 5 years, without you having to go out and buy a £150 graphics card every couple of years, consoles really are the way forward for gaming :)
