No, but people who opine that "the only advantage is the 'garageband' software" clearly don't know what they're talking about.

You don't have to own a Mac to have an informed opinion.

However, it doesn't then follow that people who don't own Macs have informed opinions.

Perhaps you quoted the wrong part of his post then.

Or perhaps you're just backtracking rather than accepting your obvious maccy snobbery?

OK, here's all of his post:

I'm not a mac laptop owner, but i go into the apple shop to try them alot. If i'm honest i dont see what the big deal is about them. I mean the only advantage is the 'garageband' software. But somehow doubt you need that, i presume.

Your paying over the odds for essentially a basic laptop, 'style' and the os.

The going price for a mac laptop? £700 atleast? new? I mean for that money you could get a really good laptop.

Which part should I have been quoting?

Yep I'd LOVE a mac but they aint MSE - get an ASUS - cheaper, works with windows (if you want it), soooo simple - oh and £170 :D

I have to say I love mine even more than a Mac user loves their Mac :D

(and they come in more than 'white' ;))

I don't own a Mac, but I do use them regularly, and I can't stand them. Mac OS is a truly horrible OS and i've never understood the attraction of spending twice the money for half the features. (or none of the features if you coinsider the Macbook Air). You should also check any essential software you use for Mac compatibility. Prices may also differ if there is a Mac alternative.

Save your money for a few more months and use that Mac budget to get yourself a top of the range laptop running Windows 7 when it gets released.

But you don't have to take my word for it... as others have said, take a trip to your local Apple store and try some out. I'd also recommend downloading and installing the Win 7 Beta if you can, to see what you think of that.
The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

Use both personally and commercial, and am far from an "idiot" , I've been using both since they were pretty much invented, Mac Pluses and SEs, and 8086 PCs - both still have their strengths and weaknesses. Neither are perfect.

OS X is an excellent OS and far more feature rich than XP or Vista, whether Windows 7 will close the gap before Snow Leopard is introduced is anyone guess. Still I love using XP, I've hated using Vista, it's a complete waste of time IMO, I need speed and reliability, and XP (PC wise) gives this to me.

The price argument isn't that valid nowadays, you have to look at the whole package, not just the hardware. And if you do want to just compare hardware, compare a decent brand, not a box shifter. Apple products are well designed, they aren't a cheap black or beige box - if that doesn't interest you, you probably won't get what all the fuss is about.

Also PC and Macs today aren't about the fastest processor, any more than the best camera is about the one with the most megapixels.

The all-in-one iMac is pretty hard to beat IMO, many PC mags draw it as the best model (against PCs), a recent example would be the Gadget Show last week - they reviewed a Sony, HP and Apple iMac, and picked the iMac the winner.

There is nothing in general I can do on a PC that I can't do on a Mac, and if I only have a Mac, I can run Windows in virtualisation if there is an unusual application I required.

However I use Windows day to day too, and design custom systems, which I find better to do on the PC, just my personal preference - for all my design and photography work, I always nip over to the Mac, because it's better than the PC for this IMO - better colour control, management and the like.

Each to their own, but to dismiss a platform because the OS is intuitive as "for idiots", is utterly ridiculous.

Still, I'm looking for a new PC at the moment, because I need both :)

    Try that bit?

I mean it's weird that it's that bit that bothered you, but rather than talk about that, you talk about the fact they're not a mac owner...

So, this bit shows they do actually know what they're talking about?

    I'm sorry, you've lost me.

Where did I "talk about the fact they're not a mac owner"?

I said they didn't know what they were talking about. You then assumed it was because they didn't own a Mac, when in fact, it was due to the content of the post.

If you want to argue that poor old Zildjian's post (whose ears are burning I'm sure) shows a knowledge of Macs beyond playing with them in the Apple Store, I'm listening.

Yes, sorry, I was confusing you and Dave, hence deleted.

Although why you're bothering to defend a position that you can't have an opinion on something unless you own it is quite beyond me.

I have no issues with the fact that Zildjian's post hardly makes him sound an expert on the matter - but *not* by him saying he doesn't own one...

What can you do in Windows that you can't do on a Mac?

Gonna stick my head above the parapet and say... play games.
Now I know a lot of the more popular games come out for mac, but the mac versions don't get reduced like PC versions do and I usually buy new games (mainly rpgs) about a month after release when they get reduced.
My OH got a macbook about 4 years ago, won't go back to pc and is constantly hounding me to get rid of the PC, and I would too if it weren't for the games...
His mantra whenever I swear at the PC cos the crappy M$ software has chosen to do the exact opposite of what I wanted it to is "I'll buy you a mac.. right now.. which one do you want":rotfl: Grrrrr.

Oh and I don't think you can upgrade them as easily (if at all?) as PCs - new graphics card etc.

    It's only a game

    No problems.

Well I can't speak for Dave, but I'm assuming if Zildjian's post betrayed a knowledge of what he was talking about, he wouldn't have said that.

It's a free country though (so I'm told anyway), and there's nothing to stop anyone voicing an opinion, regardless of how ill informed it appears to be.

Zildjian doesn't have many posts here, and I'd hate for him to feel as though he's not welcome. But, this is a discussion forum, and if someone disagrees with you, they won't be long in letting you know.
