Installing network card?

Dead easy. Log in to the router config page and click Wireless Settings and then click Setup Access List. Tick 'Turn Access Control On'. Your laptop is probably listed under 'Available Wireless Stations'.Scouse337 wrote:"The next security setting is to set up the wireless access list in the router" Is that easy to do?
If it is, click Add to move it to the 'Trusted Wireless Stations' list and then click Apply.
If it isn't, you can enter the new station (i.e. your laptop) manually. 'Device name' can be anything, e.g. MyLaptop. 'MAC address' can be found by (on your laptop) clicking Start - Run - typing in cmd and pressing return. At the command prompt type ipconfig/all and press return. In the listing the Physical Address for your _wireless_ adapter is the MAC address you type into the router. Type in the 12 hex digits (without the hyphens).
Is the PC connected to the router? If it is, do the following on both machines:Scouse337 wrote:Then how do i network the laptop to the PC and printer?? Dare i ask? lol
Open Network Connections and click 'Set up a home or small office network'. When it asks you to select a connection method, choose 'This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway'. Next, type in a unique name (and description) for the computer. On the next screen, type in the same workgroup name and on the next select 'Turn on file and printer sharing'.
If the printer has a network interface you can connect it to the router and then it is independent of the laptop and desktop. Otherwise you'll have to connect it to one of the computers which means that computer must be switched on for the other computer to print.0 -
Hi Chippy,
It was dead easy, i'd already looked into what u said 1st about adding trusted wireless stations and nearly did it on my own but thought it best to the man who knows best!! LOL Anyhow, thats all secure now!
Thanks
As for setting up the home/small office network, that all went through smooth too.
The only problem is tho i can't acces my PC files from my Laptop and the other way round? How do i share my files between the 2?
If i hadn't already thanked u enough before then much appreciated mate. Buy u a pint when ur local! LOL :beer:0 -
Anyone? Any more advice would be great, Think i just need this sorting and i'm all setup!
Cheers0 -
in explorer, right click on the c: drive, and click sharing. If it isn't there, you might not have file and print sharing enabled in control panel/networking. The firewall can also block file sharing, so if it doesn't work, check the settings in control panel/security center. then map a drive to it like \\PC1\c$ where PC1 is the name of the pc you want to access. If you google for file and printer sharing XP, there will be loads of info on how to do it.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

See Windows XP Simple File Sharing.Scouse337 wrote:The only problem is tho i can't acces my PC files from my Laptop and the other way round? How do i share my files between the 2?
Also, if you click Start - My Computer, there should be a Shared Documents folder which is already shared. The other computer has read access to files in this folder.
To see the other computer in Windows Explorer, navigate to My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - WorkgroupName - ComputerName. Or simply type \\ComputerName in the Windows Explorer address bar and press return.0 -
Hi again,
Been having a play and trying my best not to come back begging for more info but i've still had no luck trying the stuff mentioned below or reading thru and trying that!
I've added all the folders/drives i would like to share but no luck!
This is the state of play so far:
On my laptop i can now see in "view workgroup computers" both my laptop and also my PC. But when i click on my PC to gain acces it says "not accessible. i might not have permission. contact admin for permisssion(thought i was admin?) the network path was not found"
On my PC when i click on "view workgroup computers" it doesn't show my Laptop or PC and comes back with the same message as above "not accessible. i might not have permission. contact admin for permisssion(thought i was admin?) the network path was not found"
Any idea's guys?? I must be really close now....surely??0 -
You cannot access shared files and folders or browse computers in the workgroup

PS. i have windows firewall off but do have Zonealarm! Does this make any difference??
Cheers0 -
Zonelarm is no good for Networking , does not work in the free version, you can turn the windows one on and stop zonealarm to test if your filesharing works, if it does then uninstall Zonealarm and replace it with either
Sygate
http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687
or Kerio
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm
I prefer sygate myself, install one and then turn the windows one off againEx forum ambassador
