can you ping the router
start run cmd ping 192.168.0.1
if so, the your pc can talk to the router,
follow rogers advice, if you have already done it , you can go into the router config screen, and check whether it is connected to your isp
http://192.168.0.1
router status, connection status
Are you going to be using the laptop wirelessly, or wired?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
The laptop will be wireless.
As for logging on and setting the router up i didn't know i had to.(lack of instructions all round me thinks!)
The only think i've done as it said in the instructions is try to connect by typing http://192.168.0.1 in the address field on IE. When i did it said "page could not be displayed"
Looks like i'll have to do what Roger says then, errrr...how do i log into the router and setup??
Really sorry for being so thick!
Tried that ping and it said the following:
packets sent:4 Received:4
did u need any other info?0 -
These are some instructions for setting up wireless security, but you need to get it working wired first..
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=142390&highlight=%7E%7E%7E%7E%7E%40
You should be able to go to the admin page by clicking on this link
http://192.168.0.1
then you should get prompted for a username and password:
admin
password
at that point, you need to tell the router your broadband username, and password, before you can get on the internet
possibly doing a start run cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
beforehand might help..
Are you using the modem on this PC to connect to the net at the same time.
If you can ping, but can't connect using the link, check the IE connection settings under tools/internet options/connections/lan settingsEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Well i had a look at my LAN settings, didn't know what i was doing and changed a few things...lol. It worked tho! LOL It then led me onto the logging in screen and eventually when i'd got my right username and password ehy presto!!! LOL
Think i'll leave trying to get the new wireless laptop sorted until tomorrow nite(make sure u guys hide when i come back asking questions! lol)
Thanks for all the help!!!
Very happy chappy!

Don't forget to setup the wireless with some security...otherwise you may find peeps parked outside with laptops accessing your internet connection...Recently I was in a car driving around with my laptop looking for unsecure wireless networks and it was scary how many people don't have any security on their wireless networks or even their router/modems....If nothing else change the security login on the router and deffo look at setting WEP or WPA on the wireless side of things.
One other thing, don't worry about how daft a question sounds, everyone has to start somewhere and the peeps in these forums are always willing to give advice/help

Thanks for that. I have been looking already at the wireless pages on the site, but some of it is a little over my head. It's great to know there's some clever people out there willing to help and help very quickly.
Do i need to change any of the settings on the router to keep my link with the PC secure?
I'll have a go at setting the laptop up tonite and will no doubt be back later with questions and advice on how to make it more secure!(wep???wpa???)

As you all guessed i would be back! lol
I turned my laptop on and it found the router no problem and i can use the net. The only problem is i think(pretty sure!) it's unsecure. Been reading up on a few thinks and some of the stuff is either confusing or there's a couple of answers. So seeing as tho some of u know me(thick) and know my set up now which is the best route i should take to make my wireless connection secure?
cheers guys!0 -
Also just looking to update the drivers/firmware, is that a good idea, if so which version do i need as i'm looking at firmware and theres 5 verions?0
-
I'd suggest looking here on how to set up security...it relates to the router you have
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834Gv2.asp
WEP/WPA in a nutshell, Basically, you set a password on the router and then only other computers with wireless which have the same password can then access your network. WPA is more secure than WEP, however, I know that some wireless cards have difficulty establishing a connection with it. If possible setup WPA as this is harder for hackers to gain access to, saying that, WEP security is alright, its easier to crack the password, but doing that is not as easy as most people are led to believe.
I'd assume the Version 3.01.25 is the newest firmwareWelcome, rogerramjet.

Yes, it is a good idea to upgrade the router's firmware. Use the highest numbered version download. Also, do it from a wired connection and use Internet Explorer rather than Firefox because I've found that the latter doesn't work too well when applying the upgrade image.
The upgrade instructions are on the firmware version download page, but if you need any help let us know.0
