OK firmware updated and all ok.
Looked into WPA and read a few bits but doesn't tell me how to set it up!?
Where do i start guys?
Once again, cheers inadvance!!0 -
Found this:
Wireless Access Point
Enable Wireless Access Point
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)
Wireless Isolation
Wireless Station Access List
Security Options
Disable
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-802.1x
WPA-PSK Security Encryption
Network Key (8 ~ 63 characters)
Which do a i choose? and can i make the network key up or should i know it?0 -
At the top of the Wireless Settings page change the 'Name (SSID)' to something other than the router's default name and make a note of the new name.
'Enable Wireless Access Point' should be ticked, otherwise no wireless devices can connect.
'Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)' should be unticked.
In Security Options, select WPA-PSK. Go to https://www.grc.com/passwords and choose one of the 63 character passwords and paste it into the Network Key box. Have this password readily available on your laptop in a Notepad file. You could either save the file in Shared Documents on your PC and open the file from your laptop before setting up all of the above security or put it on a USB drive or CD and use 'Sneakernet' to your laptop.
Click Apply.
On your laptop, run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel.
Select 'Set up a new wireless network' and click Next. Enter the Network name (SSID) that you typed in above, select 'Manually assign a network key', tick the box 'Use WPA encryption' and click Next. Paste in the 63 character password in the Network key boxes and click Next. Select 'Set up network manually', click Next and then Finish.
Get all this working and then we can lock down the final security hole by setting up the Wireless Station Access List in the router.0 -
OK, all done and the latop is setup to work on the net with security now!
Had a problem when i got to this stage tho:
Select 'Set up network manually', click Next and then Finish.
Everytime i try it comes up with an error message telling me to see article 871122 in MS knowledge baes on microsoft.com
This then tells me:
1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click Network Connections.
3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then click Change settings of this connection.
4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the (can't find this bit!!!)Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.
Stuck again guys, sorry! I must be so close now?0 -
Good! Nearly there :T
Did your wireless network adapter come with its own wireless network software? If so then try using that instead of the Wireless Network Setup Wizard to configure it.Scouse337 wrote:4. What is the make and model number of your wireless adapter? It should say in the Wireless Network Connection properties.
Even if the wireless adapter did come with its own software, some will work with Windows managing/configuring the wireless connection and there should be an option to tell it to use Windows for this. Try starting the Wireless Zero Configuration service as described on that MS page and run the Wireless Network Wizard again.0 -
Hi Chippy,
My Laptop is a Dell 9400 and came with everything ready to go and no disc's so presume the software was already loaded?
All i can find and know about the adaptor is that it's a "Europe - intel pro WLAN 3945 internal wireless(80211.a/b/g 54mbps) for duo processors"
Does that help any???
I'll try the wireless zero config later and and get back to you!
Cheers for the advice so far.0 -
OK that laptop has wireless built in and Windows should be able to manage the wireless connection.
When you go into Properties for the Wireless Network Connection is the Wireless Networks tab there or not? If not it means you aren't connected wirelessly. If you are connected wirelessly that tab should be there and 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings' is a tick box right at the top.0 -
Chippy(and anyone else in the know!), i'm really struggling with this!

I just can't find where it says 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings'
This is what i'm doing to bring the properties box up:
1. Click Start, settings, clicking on network connections.
2. New box opens..........I'm highlighting my wirelss network connection(which states it's connected).
3. Going over to the left to click Change settings of this connection.
4. New box opens....... Wireless Networks coonection properties with 2 tabs, General tab and advanced tab. No where does it say click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.
I told you i was thick!
Do i still need to try the wireless zero config?
Please help!!0 -
I think you're all set.
The 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings' option is on the Wireless Networks tab in Wireless Connection properties and that tab only appears if Windows is managing the wireless connection. If the tab is missing it means your built in software (probably Intel PROset Wireless) is managing the connection.
It all seems to be working so I would leave it as it is.
The next security setting is to set up the wireless access list in the router.0 -
