Hi,
I have a PC and just got a laptop and wanted to network them and use broadband at the same time. I have puchased a Netgear DG834G Router and found i never had a network card in my PC, so i've got a 3com Etherlink XL 10/100 RJ45 Network Interface Card.
I've taken my old 56k modem(pci) out and slotted in the network card, but along with the card came a small 3 holed wire coloured black, yellow and red. Theres a slot on the card that it goes into, but where does it go on my motherboard?
I've tried to turn the pc on without hooking the wire but the PC won't boot up. Do i have to go to the bios?(if so how and what do i need to do?)or need to wire this card up?
Help!!!
Cheers

the 3 holes are for direc cabling for a LAN, i would use a crossover CAT5 cable that plugs into the RJ45 plugEx forum ambassador

Do i need to go into the bios? if so what do i need to change?
No drivers came with the card, so should i download some or will XP(my operating system)pick the card up auto?
Lost me on the wiring(sorry i'm thick). this si the only cable i have that came with it, does it need to be plugged into something?

if you have a router, you just need a normal cat5 cable (the blue cable that came with the netgear router ), not a crossover. It won't solve your boot problem though. I would have though that XP had drivers for your card..
It should just work, and is normally straightforward. Is is seated correctly?
Does it boot if you take the card out. Can you put the modem back in at the same time?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I suspect that extra wire is just for Wake-on-LAN functionality; you won't be needing it, and it shouldn't matter whether it's plugged in or not.0

Thanks again for the replies.
I took the network card out and put the modem back in and the pc boots fine. I do have one other PCI slot free but it's very tight next to the graphics card and thought taking the modem out would free some space as it's not needed now!
If the little wire is for LAN then it's not needed is it!? lol
I'll try again and make sure it's seated correctly, and hope XP picks it up. report back in a few mins!

best way is remove modem from System propoties
power down pc
remove modem
reboot pc
powerdown pc
plug in new card
boot pc
it should pic it up and ask for drivers (As previousley posted)0 -
OK, for some strange reason it now accepts it and allows me to boot my pc up. Not sure why it wouldn't first time around? Anyhow....
I've wired it all up and tried to connect to the net but it's not having any of it, even tho all the lights on the front of the router that should be lit are!
Any idea's how i can get back online with the router??
Is getting my laptop hooked up going to be as hard? lol
Thanks again so far............0 -
Have you logged into the router and setup the connection details? basic thing to do but regulary forgotten to be setup
