I would definitely *not* recommend the screen upgrade. It isn't really an upgrade, all you get is the bigger size. Screen resolution is the same.
If you really need a big screen (DVD watching etc) then go for it, if you need a portable laptop I hope the 14" screen makes the laptop smaller and isn't just in place with a black border around.
I can't understand why people want laptops with big screens lol. My dream laptop would be one of those nice slim ones about 10" to 12" I only wish I had £339 to spend. If I did I'd grab one 0 0

Sadly you end up with a bigger plastic bezel sorround is all. Thats partly why I recommend the bigger screen. you dont get any more portability from not getting it!!!
But having seen a 14" one now I did find it a tad small to work with aswell.
As mentioned before (with the memory issues) its all opinions, but my honest opinion is the screen upgrade is worth it if your gonna be using this laptop a decent amount.
Id be careful of advice from people who dont even have the machine tho! No offence to you anewman....0

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS BOUGHT THE DELL LAPTOP....create your Dell OS disk BEFORE you get rid of all the bloated Dell and accompanying software....I got rid of all the rubbish....Sonic stuff etc....then tried to create the OS disc....it wouldn't allow me even though I had Nero installed(it created a disc for me but I'm not sure if its all there...LOL)....the other thing is....back up the folder called "drivers"...if you decide to do a reformat to clear the drive then do a reinstall of windows you're going to need the drivers as XP doesn't have all the drivers that Dell needs....now if anyone wants to make a Dell OS cd and post it to me....lol....I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0

Of cause its more portable, its lighter!!!......some of the rubbish people come out with here is unreal!!!........by the way if your gonna be humping a laptop around everywhere and just do the basics allways go 4 a cheap 1 because it wont last.(2 years)..hinges, battery etc......the screen n battery upgrades are defo worth it.....nothing else is except crucial memory and a cheap thin external hard drive.
Anyway pays ye money n take ye choice. The £429 yesterday was a steal!!!
soz first post, im a techy an deal with dell at work, theyve allways had hard sell tactics, but they sell the best pc's on the market an in my experience after sales service is excellant, business that is, dunno bout home. Just dont buy any upgrades, warranties or periferals off them, as this is how they make thier money. Dell printers (Lexmarks) are a big big no no lol.0

i dont actually 1" of lcd screen opposed to 1" of plastic bezel is going to be any difference in weight?? Unless you missing the point that its THE SAME SIZE LAPTOP no matter which screen size you get.
As you say.... some of the rubbish people come out with here. And yet you back me up about the screen being worth it!!!! cheers!
Good to see the offer is back too 0 0

erm, the smaller screen is maybe 100g lighter - not really more portable when discussing a 3kg machine (especially when adding a 6-cell battery upgrade)! 0 0
