My wife is doing my head in , Please Help !!!!

Hello everyone

My wife is doing my head in about wanting to buy a house in the near future
We are renting a nice detached house in a nice area with a 1/2 acre back garden

We are living on the Dorset coast , We have £170K in the bank after a recent house sale

Now the problem is that she wants her own home , which I can appreciate that . But when I try to explain to her the benefits of WAITING to buy a house over her need to own right now , it causes an argument with her saying " But house prices arent dropping down here " or " Theres an awful lot of houses being sold on right move "

We are in such a good position , nothing to sell , £170K in bank , but I dont think she trusts my judgement

Could some of you please tell her her Halfwit husband (me) is doing something right for once

Thanks in advance

Are you necessarily doing the right thing? DH and I are wary about buying t the wrong time too, but there are situations where having a home if you can afford it might be good, even now. :)

Things that might influence this are your area and security of employment, you family situation, what you can afford for your money now, how long you'd want to stay it it.. and of course the local market. :)

My wife and I are both in our 40's with grown up children . Im more than happy to view this situation with my head i.e this is a business deal and to put this well above owning our own home in this present climate

our rented house is lovely , big , peaceful etc It would suit me for 12/18 months more , just that she keeps nagging me about owning . We have nice holidays etc. I have an armed forces pension , our jobs are quite secure ,

Reasure me please Guys ! lol

Wish we could help mate. But you signed the wedding documents. After that you're on your own.

    True my friend !

Ok lets put this another way . If you had £170K in the bank and living in a lovely rented house , with or without a nagging wife , what would you do to secure your home. Wait or Buy ? If wait how long !

    Thanks

I'd wait two years, a year at a a time. Take some nerve, but you obviously have an inkling how things are and where we are heading. I'd also make sure that money was sensibly invested - some shares are very likely to recover over a two year period, plus bonds, that sort of things. Spread your bets. Economy will recover one day. Housing will recover one day, some time after that.

tbh with 170k kicking around part of your portfolio might include a cash purchase a while down the line.

That's just my opinion of course and it will be rubbished.
  • Its a toughie OP, either have a discussion, or put your fingers in your ears, or stonewall, or roll over and give in. Only you know if you stand a chance of winning this one

    Good luck

Buy a copy of "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus" and read...

Distract her indoors with some shiny things.

The wife wont let us put it in anything but internet easy access 2.5% . £50K maximum per person per bank ofcourse . No chance on even discussing shares et.
