Getting rid of rats/mice (merged threads)

We had a problem with field mice too. Initially we laid down poison for them, but this resulted in some of them dying behind kitchen cupboards and causing the most repulsive stench - they were guaranteed to die behind the most difficult unit to get behind!!!
We then tried the ultrasonic repeller - absoultely useless and a waste of £30!!
Then we used mouse trap - GREAT!!! Worked well but the blighters kept coming. We discovered that there were little gaps on the external walls where we guessed they were coming from.
So what we did, and works best for us, was to lay down some cotton wool balls with @ 10-15 drops of peppermint oil (from health shops) down the route the mice take - mice don't like the smell of peppermint. We waited a few days and THEN plugged in the gaps on the external wall. No mice sincetouch wood!!
The only downside is that you need to keep refreshing the cotton wool balls every few weeks when the smell of the peppermint starts to go. The upside is that your house smells nice and keeps your sinuses art bay!!:D
You could also use mothballs, but your house wont smell very nice.

Did you try the primrose one?, that is supposed to have electromagnetic (whatever that means!) as well0 -
Well dellboy102 if you still don't see any more mice its gotta be working for you atleast.
Thanks for the response.0 -
I think it is, but i'm worried they may be in hiding and spring back up after a while.0

I have blocked holes, used traps etc, and thought I got rid. However, 1 year on and the !!!!!!s have come back. Seen droppings behind my sofa, fridge, tv, etc.
I have heard lots of praises about the following device

I have used some electronic devices in the past which didn't work, but has anyone actually bought the one listed above. I would like your opinions before I buy again. Many thanks in advance. Freda.0 -
I would like to know if these work too.... I have just been woken up by mice knawing away in my loft...I would love to be a Travel Agent :j0

We get mice every so often and are just busy getting rid of them at the moment. I suppose it's the price we pay for having countryside up to our front door!
We always just use traps. The Spanish ones are very effective and kill the mouse instantly so that it doesn't suffer (the main reason I'm against poison, they take days to die, there's no need to be unneccesarily cruel). We caught three mice yesterday and one today.
However, this thing is a very humane method of control if it works, I'll ask my husband to look at it and would also welcome other peoples' comments.
In my experience the 'mouse friendly' traps don't work.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
I got some of the electronic devices from primrose london a few months ago, and I haven't seen a mouse since. However, I didn't have many mice (no droppings or anything chewed) and as I live in a big appartment block in London, I think they were in the building, and just came through my flat occasionally. I put all food away in boxes so it wouldn't attract them, and plugged in the whole house repeller and also 3 of the smaller ones in other rooms just to make sure! Haven't seen a mouse run through the flat since, or heard them in the walls. I got the electronic devices after reading this thread on these forums, and thought I'd give it a try!
