Funny, but the hair colour I use says if you want to exactly replicate the colour on the box to use their superblonde lightener first

Lightener yes :) But the bleach in most blonde colours are what i think reacts :) It's obviously one of the agents in some (maybe not all?) blonde colours? I think the hairdressers advise professional colouring from faux blonde to darker because it's almost impossible to be sure if the hair colour that you're going to use IS likely to react or not :)
And it's easier to prevent than fix :)

    Hi,
While there are some 'people in the know' are here could I please ask for some related advice. My daughter has naturally fair hair, not bright blonde, for some reason she wanted to go brown, now she would like to return to her fairer colour. Does she have to wait for the colour to grow out or is there any way she can lighten it without bleaching and damaging her hair. We tried a light colour on it but it didn't make any difference.
Hope someone can help and thanks in advance.

Yes she can lighten her hair, but personally for major colour changes I would go to a hairdresser to get it done... Light colours won't make any difference as they don't contain enough bleach to fade the existing colour so that it makes a difference.
She COULD try a lightener but I would fork out for the hairdressers visit - much more MSE than fixing it if it goes wrong - OR find a local college :)
It will 99% certain involve bleach however - I have mine highlighted and lowlighted when I have time and money - the best way to protect it I found is to once a week when she's washing it take an extra large dollop of conditioner and leave it in for as long as absolutely possible - my hairdresser can't believe how healthy my hair is despite the colours etc (and the fact my hair is about 3 foot long so the ends should be VERY prone to drying out and splitting...).

I had really blond highlights dyed out at the hairdressers and I said don't you need to put some red on first and he siad nah this is permanent brown and will cover it, it didn't and went all patchy and weird so they ahd to put more dye ontop of it- was there for about 6 hours. The main hairdresser came over before the second lot of dye and said you should have put red on it first, hello!

It does make me laugh when people say not to have their hair done by a trainee - how do they think their usual hairdresser learnt how to cut/colour hair!?!?

I think I would prefer to get mine done by a trainee - they take their time, they are being closely watched and advised by their mentor and its cheaper!!!
  • all those that went from blonde to brunette did you get a different re-action from people?Just a thought about if people treat you differently?

Put ketchup in your hair it neutralises it thats what I did my hair was khaki green and went brown once i did that :)

    HTH

OMG This brings back memories! When I was blonde or had highlights - I always had to use ketchup on my hair as my dad has spring water at home and it makes your hair go green if you don't use it - think it's something to do with the copper in the water! Gross, gross, gross!!!

I'm another who would recommend the local college/hairdressing college. My best haircuts have been done by trainees as they are gentler, more patient and scared stiff of getting it wrong so they make a much better job of it! I had my hair highlighted (using a cap) by a trainee and I didn't feel a thing whereas a trained stylist would have had my scalp stinging with pain!
  • after dying my hair blonde for about 20 years  i had it dyed dark brown a few weeks ago. mainly because it was getting a bit thin at the ends and damaged and i had a major panic attack thinking all my hair was going to fall out so i decided to give it a break. because i had 3 tones of blonde in there , the first brown dye looked a bit patchy and i had to have it done again but i still say at the roots it looks good but down the length is patchy!

people certainly react differently-mainly guys 'what have you done to your beautiful blonde hair' and a LOT of people try and have very intelligent, serious conversations with me now - never used to get that before!!!

i am 50/50 as to whether i like it or not but think it will kill my hair to dye it all blonde again!!
  • haha when I was 14, amd going through a bit of a 'phase', I intentionally died my hair green :rotfl:

My mum, not suprisingly was NOT impressed, she had me at hairdressers first thing next morning :o
