from blonde to brunette

I have been dying my hair blonde for as long as i can remember but lately i wanted to go darker( i didnt want to look like mutton)Anyway all the hairdressers told me i would haveto dye it red first and then brown and it must be done professionally. I couldnt afford that and after a couple of wines me and a friend decided to use one that i had in the cupboard and only cost £3.50.
It came out great and everyone reckons i should have done it years ago.
Is this just a ploy from the hairdressers to get more business or was i just lucky.?
Whatever im pleased with the result and i have saved loads.

did the dye you used have a bit of a red colour to it? if you go from blonde to a "cold" brunette shade without red inbetween it comes out khaki 99% of the time, but if you used a "warm" shade (i.e. with red in it) then it can sometimes come out ok. you were lucky!!Mummy to

there was a tiny hint of green so my daughter said but i couldnt see it,so i just put a wash in/out chestnut brown on top.(the things you do when you have had a wine or two)0

As long as the colour has some shade of red in it you are fine. At 14 I went from blonde to brown and it went green
Don't think it's a ploy - some people do mess it up at home and it ends up costing more to sort out in the end!A very busy Yummy Mummy to a 1 year old gorgeous boy :smileyhea

It can go VERY wrong - my sister is a hairdresser and some of the horrorstories she's come across where people who have been bleaching their hair and then decide to go brown/black/whatever and it goes wrong are too numerous to count! The main problem is that if you have bleached your hair previously your hair will react to the colour of the new colour. This is why it really ought to be done professionally - it's not a ploy!

Sounds like you were VERY lucky and only got a slight green tinge - keep an eye on it as when the colour starts fading with washes it might start looking greener again and you might find it's worth getting the hairdresser to sort it rather than colour it again with a cheap home dye... it DOES make a difference to your hair - honest!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! I'm so glad I didn't read this post an hour ago - whilst I was colouring my hair!! I was panicking enough about it as I haven't done my own hair in years. Even though mine wasn't blond to start with OH was teasing me about it turning green and I refused to accept that was going to happen. Luckily it's turned out a very nice shade of red

I'm not sure why the hairdresser told you that - I had been dying my hair blonde for a year or two and went to the hairdresser to dye it dark brown and they did it no questions.
Could be what Glamazon said though - most brown colours have red in them apart from the "ash browns" I think.0 -
You were lucky I did that once and my hair went green!!
Im all better now though lol0
