I got the following off OSPS website but as e2save are part of the same company I assume the same definition applies:
By using reconditioned/clearance stock, we are able to offer you even further savings on your monthly line rental!

These items are either ex-demonstration, trial or mail order returned. These are not flawed products although they may carry very minor cosmetic marks. For your peace of mind, each and every handset has been quality inspected by our engineers & reconditioned if necessary. Each handset also comes with a full years manufacturers warranty.

Please note that reconditioned handsets are usually repackaged once tested and do not come in the original branded box. These products are only packaged with a manual and charger, other accessories and memory cards are not guaranteed.

well this is all a bit of a pain. I ordered one clearance deals 2 weeks ago, and another on tuesday. Both are out of stock, and going by what others have said, it sounds like we wont get them. And yet checks have been done with Orange, so surely this screws up credit records?

I don't understand how e2save can afford to give you £41.50 cash back and then the whole amount of the contract back again. How can they do this?

    Thanks

It's not how can they do it - it's why do the networks pay more commission than the line rental? But don't worry about it while it lasts.

I've ordered an ericsson 550i as a bit of a change from my contract orange 6230i on the 1000mins off peak deal, and guess what... it's out of stock! I rang them and said what's the situation, and they basically said that they are expecting more in soon (the woman explained it as they are returns, and there are some in with the engineers being tested at the moment, and they should be ready to send out within the next 7 days so I'm holding on. Just seems too good a deal to miss.

They get commission from Orange for each new customer that signs up and bonus commission for reaching sales target. They have increased their cashback offer because maybe they have not reached their Orange sales target yet, and want the bonus commission for surpassing the sales target.

If you look at the bigger picture, that £41.50 incentive is to bring customers to their network, where on a 12 months they (Orange) will get a guaranteed amount of say £240 (£20 x 12 months) for one contract plus extras that the customer will use if they go over or its not included in their tariff. If the incentive was low then the organisation(s) may not be willing to try and attract more customers so they can't reach their sales target and not enjoy the bonus for reaching sales targets?

Don't patronise me please; I was looking at the bigger picture, but you've left the high level of dealer commission out of the reckoning.

Orange may get a guaranteed amount of £240, but it has cost them well over £300 to acquire that customer, just as my £35 a month to O2 will cost them somewhere near £500, and an old T-mobile one cost them £200 for £159.60 income.
  • There's other factors too:

Many people forget to claim their cashback and so e2save etc will have budgeted for this and not for 100% of people claiming it back.

The offers that work out as totally free for us are mostly on rubbish tariffs where it is very likely that there will be usage outside of the free allowances and so the phone companies will get more than just the £240

Well I've ordered mine and guess what? It's out of stock but showing as in stock, order now. Does that mean that it has been accepted by the network operator? I just can't wait to get my phone and get the cash back too.

    Thanks
