From their website. As I'm a new user I'm not allowed to post links. If you google "TTISPC" - you'll get the website.

  • These letters are, without a doubt, a scam. Let me tell you about my experience with them that appears to prove this.

Since August 2008 I had been a tenant in a flat with one other friend, Sophie. On 31st January 2011 this friend moved out and a new friend, Hannah, moved in on 1st February 2011. I stayed throughout.

In June 2011 we received a debt collection letter at the property, addressed to The Occupier. The letter said that £47 was owed for gas and electricity supplied on the 30th and 31st of January 2011.

Between Aug 08 and 31st January 11 the British Gas account had been in Sophie's name. When Sophie moved out we asked for a final bill and opened a new account from 1st Feb in Hannah's name. This meant that, on paper, it appeared that the tenancy on the flat had changed, however, I had been there throughout and knew that all bills had been paid continuously over the period that this company was attempting to collect debt for.

These letters always seem to refer to debts supposedly owed for a time before a new tenant or owner has moved in, meaning it will be difficult or impossible for them to prove that the bills were or weren't paid. I think these debt collection companies are not trying to make money from 0870 calls, they are phishing in the hope that just a few naïve people will be frightened into thinking they should pay these bills.

The worst thing is that British Gas, or perhaps another utility company, is selling information to the debt collectors about when a change of tenancy or ownership takes place.

Strangely, when I contacted British Gas about the letter, although they confirmed that nothing was owed, they didn't make any attempt to explain that this was a scam, which struck me as suspicious. Surely they should want to alert people to these phishing letters, unless of course they are somehow making money from them.
