My rescue cats rescued me!

Something very strange happened last night.

During the night my three cats woke me up. One was licking (sandpapering) my brow, the big boy was walking around on my chest and meowing loudly and the third was chewing my fingers. They have never, ever been all three on the bed before, (they are bonding, but very slowly).

Once awake I felt really awful and realised there was something very wrong. When I struggled to the bathroom and did a test, my blood sugar levels were much, much too low (I'm diabetic). Obviously I'd gotten something seriously wrong with my medication and was having a hypo which is very, very unusual for me and also really dangerous, especially when asleep.

Once I'd sorted myself out and given the cats a "thank you" treat they went back to their beds and went to sleep as if nothing had happened.

I'm still a bit stunned at the realization of what they did. How the hell did they know it was important to wake me up? What made all three of them combine their efforts when there is still a little mistrust between two of them?

I'm totally awed.

Thank God your cats were there Racy!

Sometimes our furry friends are dismissed as "dumb animals". I totally disagree with this, they perceive the world in a completely different way to us and it's us who don't understand.

Words kind of fail me Racy - your cats are amazing little life savers. Please give them a kiss and a cuddle from me.

Not detracting from your experience, but I have an acquaintance who was also saved by her cat. Her cat decided to lick and lick and lick at her face in one particular area, until eventually blood was drawn. She went to the doctor and it transpired that she had a skin tumour in that very area. It wasn't visible or palpable so she'd never have known there was a problem until it was many times worse, except for the cat's actions.

Racy, maybe you could contact the CPL as they are very interested to hear about incidences such as you described. Your kitties might win a prize - though they have already received the prize of having their mommy wake up and sort herself out.

    Bless your little furry angels!

Your cats rule! Bless their little paws, they certainly love their mummy. Goes to show the only people who think animals are dumb are dumb humans.

  • :T Thanks RR. I agree with suekjw - lovely to read stories like this. Just a thought, maybe the readers of Womans Own, Take a Break, blah, blah, would like to hear about it too.

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I'm sure they prefer chicken... opening the freezer and operating the microwave would be a walk in the park for them :D

I thought when these three began to arrive that I shouldn't ever be without a cat. Now I know it for sure.

Although scary, hypos are very easily dealt with once I realise what is happening.

The cats are very caring towards each other if one is ill, I'm so glad they have extended their circle of care to include me.

    Fascinating story.

Obviously with your blood sugar so low you would have been producing more ketones and the cats must have smelt this on your breath and realised it wasn't right! What a reward for rescuing them!!

Best keep the bedroom door open so they can keep an eye on you in the future.

they come and lay by my side, on me or a combination.
