Who’s felt the Pound–Euro strain? Did it affect your holiday?

I went on a holiday to Spain last week, and have 2 more booked in Europe. I’m seriously feeling the pinch when it comes to the Euro now. The average price of a meal is now about £20 and beer is costing as much as £6 a pint! I certainly won’t be visiting Europe again until ether the Euro crashes or the Pound is actually worth something again.
At all Burro de Change outlets I visited, I was getting 92 cent to the pound. The whole thing is a joke and I strongly advise anyone thinking of going away, to holiday in the UK or head to countries that hasn’t adopted the Euro. If you have got a holiday booked in Europe change up your money before you go, I used to always get a better deal while out there, defiantly doesn’t seem the case anymore.
One thing our country should be focusing in on though is foreign travellers. Tourists are now coming to the UK and there able to get almost twice as much for their money as they do in their own countries. If our Governments want to throw money into thin air as they seem to be doing at the moment, why not put it to better use and do some major TV ads all over Europe, advertising what a cheap place to holiday the UK is. We will be getting French call centres opening up over here next.

if you'd just drawn cash out of the cash point whilst you were over there you'd have got about 10 cents more to the pound.0 -
We were in Amsterdam for New Year. ooof that hurt! Good job we got a near magical deal on the hotels ( always v expensive there no matter what the exchange rate is doing) on a package from lastmin. IUt hurt though, £2 for portion of frites. Oh wanted an 11 pound fry up ( of course it was crap) and a plate of cheese/ continental sausage/ salad was about 18 quid. Boozing was expensive although the spirits I found quite strong
Mum & dad just got back form a few days in Monte Carlo and they said it was really expensive, BUT it probably always has been and they say you dont go there looking for bargains
Were off to Malaysia in a few weeks, we expect that to be reliatavely cheap (4* hotels around the 25 qiud mark) we honestly couldnt afford 2 weeks holiday in Europe now. But its great thatour continental freinds are coming here! I must say I was on oxford st the other day and there were LOADS of tourists and we are not even into summer season yet. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I've only just found out that smaller than a Euro is called a cent - never thought about what the equivalent of our penny is before!0

I would not have expected you to know much about the Euro being a regular holidaymaker to Blackpool each year! :rotfl:0 -
Not impacting on my holidays at all.......I don't go abroad as I can't afford it!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Must say the pound bought as little as it always did in Pembrokeshire, but that was more than at home in Fleecetheforeigntourists&fcukthelocalsshire.0

I still have 350 euros in Travellers' cheques I bought at 1.434 a couple of years ago.
The low exchange rate currently just means that I'll just have to divert a bit more of my pocket money into my Nationwide account (that I use for overseas spending).....0 -
how about a tourist tax- say 5 euros / USD a head, for anyone coming into the UK, or paying for stuff in anything apart from proper British Paaands!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0 -

I don't think Nationwide do the 'Free Withdraw' thing anymore.0 -
