Who’s felt the Pound–Euro strain? Did it affect your holiday?

I felt the strain in Ireland last month, effin h*ll its expensive. We were in Limerick so not even Dublin prices.
Won't be returning and they are now adding a 10Euro tourist tax as well.
.
10 Euro tourist tax? First I've heard of it, how does that work then?
I wanted to go to France or Italy this year but instead I think it will be USA as the exchange rate is so poor and Europe is now even more expensive than rip off Britain.0 -
If any thread is going to make me feel inferior, it is this one!*
Oh well, back to Great Yarmouth this year (yes I have found a cheepie thanks to parents contacts!).
*Please note this is not a woe is me attempt, it is my weird humour and should be taken as such
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Do they also sell feesh at the cheepie?

Don't worry Sue, there will be more people holidaying in the UK this year and that's good news for our rural economy, though not perhaps so great for the less developed countries that depend very heavily on tourism.
In theory, it is good that people travel and broaden ther horizons, but despite the 'global village' thing, there still doesn't seem to be increased harmony and understanding between the peoples of the world.
Meanwhile, back in the UK, we have one or two generations who know much less about their own rich heritage than one might expect. I frequently start describing a day's outing of, say, 40miles or so to others, and then realise, by the blank stares, that they have never been anywhere near the place I'm talking about. Even well known waymarked walks of a few miles beyond the city boundary, taking in a couple of villages, if mentioned, produce much scratching of heads!0 -

IMO history is expensive in the UK and the free outside architecture is less appealing because all the shops are at ground level and the same in every town.0 -
we went to marrakech over xmas and there was a marked difference between local prices and those in the 'sophisticated' mainly french riads and french restaurants (euro prices). dirham is not a bad exchange rate.
i also went to venice recently and could not believe the cost of food and drinks - in the centre, 22 euros for a hot choc and coffee! needless to say we beat a hasty retreat to a local cafe and (still) spent about 6 euros on a coffee and coke. even at the little local trattorias a primi piatti with salad and drink was 15 euros each. oh for the days when you could get a dish of the day with drink for about 7 pounds in italy and france and even cheaper in greece.
my dh was desperate to go on hols to sicily - really tried to persuade him that two weeks is going to sting but he booked it none the less (there goes the str fund). I think he is beginning to regret it now as he can see that each meal out (with kids) is going to cost about 50 - 80 euros and i have point blank refused to spend every day cooking in an apartment to save money as i want a holiday too!
dreading the school holidays - may be cheaper to actually go long haul - south africa has always been reasonably priced despite flight costs and looking at some of these other posts, maybe malaysia (what is it like in aug?)0 -
There are people who can afford to go abroad on holiday? I'll be lucky with a tent in the back garden...not that I have a garden...oh.
The foreign exchanges are always swings and roundabouts. It's the pounds turn to suffer on all those lovely package holidays...
...still think about all that air fuel you'll be saving by not flying to a beach in Spain. Think of the planet, dudes, not your suntan - a suntan that might lead to you getting skin cancer.
Sorry, I'm a rather odd mood this morning.
Regards.:hello:0 -

Not odd at all. I agree 110%0 -
I'll join you in the weird mood, I most certainly am today too!
I was asked a few weeks back where I would like to go away to on holiday..money no object sort of thing.
I said Dorset, followed by Disneyland Paris and if really pushed New Zealand! Given a few weeks to think about it, my options would be Egypt, New Zealand and errr Dorset.
The thought of flight delays, long flights, keeping children occupied on the flights, overbearing heat etc rather put me off but I am a hardy soul and if ever offered, I would jump at the chance, take the bull by the horns and by goodness we would manage a way around the boys and their weirdness! We made it!
