Who’s felt the Pound–Euro strain? Did it affect your holiday?

It's pretty crap right now. I will be going to Greece shortly and it will cost a lot more then last year. Last year I was moaning like !!!!!! about the exchange rate being 1.25 to the Pound. I would love that now!0

I'm off to Majorca in a few weeks and it seems to me from looking online that most prices are similar to here. I'm going self catering and don't expect to be spending that much - just want to chill out on the beach. I think it'll probably still work out cheaper than a week in a self catering apartment in the UK would be.0

In france ski-ing €5 for a coke on the mountain - when that was £3 you thought - well, I'm on holiday. Now it's £5 you think - sod that, I'll chew some snow.
Fortunately, got a really good deal on a catered Chalet, so only had to eat out one night & did that on the cheap too. Ski-hire we did online in the UK, cost about £110, when I took them back the cost in the shop was €250 ish:eek:"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.0 -
We normally have a holiday to US every year and I usually have a holiday to Europe with my grandson - it was Malta last year with him and Skiathos and Portugal and Minorca in previous years - also went to Crete last summer.
We are still going to the US this year as normal - but have decided that I will not be going to any countries that use the Euro. I found last year it was getting pretty pricey. Crete wasn't too bad last year - but I would imagine it will be getting expensive now.
We go to Egypt too, although the rate has dropped to about LE8.5 per £ from about LE10, it's still very cheap if you don't spend all of your money in the hotel. So that could be an option for us later in the year.0 -
I'm over in Ireland at the moment with work, for the last 18 months I have seen Sterling metomorphosise into toilet paper. Everywhere, abroad and at home we can see Brown's scorched earth policy taking shape. It's more expensive abroad, and because we import near enough everything we consume, it's more expensive at home.
When I fill my expense form in, I have to put the conversion rate in, and in the last 18 months it has gone from over 1.41 euros to the pound down to 1.03.
Yet again, when Labour get removed from power, the country will be on its knees economically, when will we ever learn.0 -
Now that is one holiday I would love...always wanted to go ski-ing. When we could afford it, I had a husband that refused to go! This was the guy who after paying out for ice skate hire, put one foot on the rink and then decided it was too risky and refused to go any further, he had to sit and watch me for the next 3 hours because I refused to leave after paying my money...had to get my monies worth! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

You never miss an opportunity to have a dig at the Government, that's your choice.
I bet you are a bundle of laughs. You're the sort of person I would give a wide berth.0 -

I tell you what, write me a list of the economic virtues of this Labour government, I doubt you could fill the back of a stamp with a six inch paint brush.:D0 -
They do in Euroland, the recent changes (due in May I think) are for rest of the world.I don't think Nationwide do the 'Free Withdraw' thing anymore.
One thing to watch (particularly in Spain) is that cashpoints offer you the 'opportunity' to use their coversion rate and charge your card in quids - works out around 3% less dosh for Nationwide cards (around the same for cards which charge).0 -
I felt the strain in Ireland last month, effin h*ll its expensive. We were in Limerick so not even Dublin prices.
Luckily the flights were 1p each way so there was money in the budget.
Won't be returning and they are now adding a 10Euro tourist tax as well.
Northern Ireland instead no problems.
Mostly staying in the uk this year.
Hopefully we will get some inward tourism to the UK this year but maybe not is people all over the world are losing jobs.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep
& Choo Choo for trains!!0
