Not everyone is like Goodwin, though most people have the potential to be like him in some ways. He represents the rare combination of intelligence, ferocious ambition, ruthlessness, obsessiveness, stamina, persistence, greed, arrogance, guile, and unscrupulousness that seems to be the pre-requisite for high office in most fields in this sad modern world that we live in. Some people have his more worthy characteristics -- being say bright, ambitious and hard working, but lack the ruthlessness etc to outpace those like him who have both. Similarly. some are as nasty as Goodwin, but not sufficiently bright, or cunning, to outsmart his ilk in the political stakes. Sadly people like Goodwin tend to get to the top because they have all the necessary tools in their armoury to fend off the competition in the jungle that comprises modern bureaucratic hierarchies. They also want it more than most others and are willing to put in the time and effort to get what they want. They can also sleep nights as they stitch others up, which many of us fortunately cannot. Too often it is the scum that rises to the top, not the cream.
No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.
