It was not ideal that you didn't get to know ahead of the event to plan. I do not think that there is an issue with the school asking for £2 towards to cost of fuel for the bus. As a governor I know how tight it can be to balance the school budget, and a contribution from those participating wil make a real difference.0

Thats what i'm not getting though why should there be no cost? Sorry if i'm been blonde or something but surely the school still has to pay for petrol, insurance, maybe the extra member of staff that goes aswell. Maybe even the payment for the mini bus? Surely if you want your child to have the experience of playing rugby then the £2 is nothing? Also you say the trip was 11-5pm surely theres outside of school hours wages too?
Dunno maybe the school should just not enter the rugby leagues or whatever if they cant afford to fund it themselves?
You're right. After all, it's only 2 pounds, what is there to moan about?
Anyway, isn't it an established prinicple that if you play a team sport, you have to pay 'subs' to cover the cost of playing the sport?
The fact that someone can actually get worked up enough over two pounds to spend their time ranting, raving and posting about it on here astounds me.From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -

Why? OP has already said many times why she's annoyed. 1) No parent was given prior information about the £2 contribution despite the school paying hundreds of pounds in postage to send first class letters out about the trip, and 2) her son felt obliged to pay with his lunch money, therefore I assume having no lunch.
What's difficult to understand?
Plus, some families don't have a great deal of extra money floating around at the moment so extra subs for sports and trips have to be carefully planned in a budget. There are times in my life when £2 here and there was critical.
Don't assume because £2 means nothing to you, it's nothing to everyone else."carpe that diem"0 -

My own son plays for a club, and also the District team on top of his school committment. He is picked for the school team in an instant because of his ability and the fact that he (along with the other local team members) ensures that their team actually compete and shine. I spend a very large sum of money per annum on transporting him to the out of school activities that support the efforts of the school in having a first rate rugby team: to be asked to pay for transport for the school team as well would be unreasonable and even in my distant days at school (60's and 70's) would not have been considered by a school who wanted the children to represent them at something that is part of the curriculum.
We have never been asked to contribute to this - it is considered something that the school does for "prestige" (for lack of a better word) and to encourage effort in sports lessons."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

Why is it riddiculous???
Are all the boys at the school offered the oppertunerty to go? If not then why should these boys get extra funding spent on them just because they are lucky enough to have been chosen to be on that team?
An alternative and a compromise could be that the boys should be encouraged to do fundraising to cover any extra costs of travel etc if the parents aren't happy to pay for the petrol contribution. 15 strapping lads? Shouldn't take long to wash a dozen cars at £5 a go - viola there's £60 so the next 2 trips paid for
Because most of those boys have worked especially hard at the sport to make it to the team, and luck has little to do with it;)"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0
