I've never had to dispose of an entire pan, but when I have used oil I mix it with bird food and stale bread and "bits" and feed the birds with it.

OH thinks my bird pie is disgusting, and hates it when large pieces end up on the lawn as it makes greasy patches.

Gosh I have a little more than half a pot of vegetable oil and no ingredients appropriate for bird food....

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks.

Hi, there! We have an older thread on this subject, so I'll add your question to it to keep all suggestions together.

We have facilities at the household recycling site.

Is it totally unusable for cooking? Could you strain it, put it into a bottle marked "used once cooking oil"?

Then it could maybe used to roast vegetables such as peppers and garlic to make pasta sauces?
Or chips on another blue moon day.

I know that fish'n'chip shops use their oil more than once........

I recently read (through a link I found here) that you can use old (filtered) cooking oil to fill homemade oil lamps - the oil apparently has a very low 'flash point', so if it does happen to fall over, it's safer than a candle - off to hunt for the site now - I'll add a link as soon as I find it (must organise bookmarks!).

Could be a good one for the 'use less gas and electric' thread.

If you've only used it the once I would pour it back into a bottle and reuse it. I used to do chips at least once a week and reuse the oil several times, usually throwing it when I had cooked scampi or chicken in it. Usually I mix bird seed in it and put it in marg tub on the bird table. I wouldn't put it down the drain, if your friend does this on a regular basis she will end up with a plumbers bill sooner or later.

Now I am fancying proper chips cooked in lard - much tastier than oil - or proper beef dripping - yum

yes I also filter oil and re-use it several times, as long as it still looks and smells clean. I believe this is OK as long as you don't repeatedly heat it to too high a temperature - but note that some oils have a higher 'cooking stability' than others. Once I feel it should go: I have a huge washing liquid bottle (Lidl's) in the shed marked 'used cooking oil'. Once this is full, we take it on our next visit to the recycling site and empty it.
I like the idea of using it for an oil lamp as in the post above - but I wonder would it be smelly?

Every once in a while, as a special treat, I will make chips from scratch (instead of oven chips from frozen.) I have a deep fryer that requires more than a liter of oil and I never know what to do with the oil when I'm done. Where can one dispose of cooking oil? I asked at the recycling tip and they said the container for oil was only for motor oil, not cooking oil, so I'm at a loss.

I would consider keeping it in the fryer, but I don't know if that's safe. How long can it last in there? I don't use the fryer very often, so I'm not sure if that's a good idea, unless I can feel safe using it after several weeks.

Still, I would eventually have to get rid of it. I like to use new oil to make chips, instead of funky-tasting old oil.

We take our oil from the deep fat fryer to our local tip and no-one's ever said anything. Cooking oil is used as fuel nowadays too.
