Deep Fat Fryer - Oil Disposal

Last year I caved in and bought a deep fat fryer because everyone loves real chips (except DD).

I've always poured the old oil into a little spot in the garden but as I'm growing so much out there I can't carry on doing this.

What does every other fryer owner do with theirs?

  • It can be disposed of over here at local council amenity sites, I'm not sure about mainland tho. You could always keep old plastic tubs, pour it into that then put it in the bin??

I used to keep an old empty oil bottle and would tip the old oil into it, when ready to get rid, then i could bin it safely with the lid on.
  • I read yesterday that it is a good idea to let it soak into cat litter. It wouldn`t take that much out of a bag

i pour it into an empty 2lt bottle ( ie coke or similar) then it goes out with normal rubbish.

but i hardly use my fryer , so i don't have lots of oil to deal with.
  • I keep the bottle I had the oil in, pour it back in, then tie it up tight in a old carrier bag to keep the lid on and in case of leaks and chuck it in the bin. I don't reuse oil because it is not supposed to be very good for you - something to do with oxidisation and free radicals.

If you are really "green" you can pour it onto the compost heap as it is organic it breaks down with all the other stuff.

Another one here who keeps an old bottle of cooking oil/coke to put it back into. Put it in a carrier bag then into the bin.

I hadn't thought about reusing it by seiving it. I must give that a try next time. Though if that isn't very good for you, then I might not.
