I really recommend the rotary cheese graters. I got mine from Lidl and it's fantastic. I once tried to grate a whole block of cheese and it must have taken hoouurrs. So easy with the rotary, though, takes a few minutes and doesn't hurt your arm. Only thing with them is that when you get down to the really small bit it can't really push it through so it just collects. It has to be really very small, though, so I just eat it.

I do loads at once in the magimix and then freeze it, you can use it straight out of the freezer. means i buy cheese on special offer.

Yeah, grating and then freezing cheese is definately the best way of making it last.
I heard you can add a suger cube to it to stop it going moldy and other tips, but frankly who wants the hassle - freeze it grated and then break a bit off when needed for favour.

I guess you can grate it by holding it in a teacloth, but your always going to have a little end left. I just use my fingers and stop near the end triangle which forms.
so says another ordinary mug fighting the 1% who own the political machine grinding them down from on high...

I just dont great it usually... Just slice it up really small instead. It's not quite the same but because it takes more time I appreciate it more when I get it lol

I used to think those rotary graters were good, until I used one and realised it took a LOT of cleaning - not to mention you have to cut the cheese first to fit the hole.

One trick I use is once your fingers get vaguely close to the grater, pop the cheese in your mouth and get another piece to continue grating.

Weeeeeeeellllll...... at risk of being shot down....( And I hear what you're saying about the added ingredient anti caking agent -potato starch ) ... but, I've found ready grated cheese in both Lidl and Sainsburys are now cheaper than buying the block. I think ( after much Flylady discussion some months ago :D ) it's because they can use all the scrag ends.

Fortunately I don't have any health issue to do with potato starch, so cheaper, ready grated works for me. I stick it straight in the freezer and use it as I need it.

Since I've been buying it - must be for at least 9 months now, I've never had any problem with the quality or the flavour. Additionally I've never wanted to use cheese in any other format than grated.

Fwiw..... I'm another one that rates the rotary grater. We had one when I was a child. I used to love how finely it grated cheese. :)

    Squeamish alert!!

Last time I grated cheese, I grated the tip of my little finger clean off... It bled... a lot... I've got an interesting dent in my finger now ;)

I always keep grated in freezer as I forget to do until last min and then have to rush and include my finger tips as I'm watching pans etc!

I found main supermarkets grated tastes a bit odd, yes guess was what they add to it, but LIDL's tastes fine and is cheaper than the blocks
