    Where do you get grated gruyere, I have never seen it, but would be interested - DS loves it.

    Glad that my suggestion for mozzarella was useful to you, thriftlady! BTW I tend to buy the occasional bagged salad too, when rocket is not growing in my garden!

    I could live on cheese - I gobble up a mozzarella in a tomato salad, like there's no tomorrow. I occasionally buy grated cheddar, but never grated parmesan. My Parmigiano Reggiano comes in the usual wedge and I keep it tightly wrapped in cling film. Never lasts long with me anyway as fresh parmesan is an excellent cheese in its own right, great with bread or crackers. :drool:

    This thread suggests that it isn't ;) I agree, it's a greater surface area, so grated cheese goes off more quickly.

    Actually, that thread suggests that although it can look cheaper it's usually more expensive in the long run as it consists of the cheaper cheese with less flavour.

    The cheap range grated cheese is cheaper per kilo than the cheapest block cheese.

    I buy it to make bird cakes :o if I haven't any old cheese left. :)

    I just buy a block, grate in my food processor, and leave it in a plastic box in the fridge. It goes further grated, and is easy to use. If it starts to go green, I just pick out the green bits!

    I do the same except I keep it in the freezer - fewer green bits, longer life...
