I think we're getting there...
espresso, what's puzzling me is that the OP indicated that they are already getting a wireless connection, good signal strength etc., but can't open a browser window.
I'm thinking maybe either a firewall issue, or maybe the old PC doesn't support WPA (which is why I was asking if it is running SP2, SP3 etc)?No free lunch, and no free laptop

It's possible to have 100% signal strength connection but if the encryption is not configured correctly, no data can be passed over the wireless link.
So when she says in post 34 that she got 'Status: connected'. that does not mean that it has got the encryption already? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Ok, I tried my problem PC again, used the useless "talktalk whatever" which wastes time and then leaves the icon crossed out (no connection)....
Then I read your messages and now I opened the connection window again and it asks me for the network key (WEP or WPA)... is that the SSID or the Encryption code? Because I believe that is the only question I get...0 -
Errr weren't we at this point some time ago? It's possible to have 100% signal strength connection but if the encryption is not configured correctly, no data can be passed over the wireless link.
Which is why I said (way back in the recesses of time!) -So where the message popped up (taskbar - bottom right of the screen) you should have a network or wireless icon. If you double click on that you should get a box open up with an option to 'View Wireless Networks'. Click on that and you'll get a list showing yours and your neighbours' networks.
Double click on your one and it should ask for the Security (WAP/WEP) key (which I'm sure you've got written down from when you set up the laptop!!?).
Enter the key and you should be away. If not let us know.0 -

Yes, we were, but at that point the OP couldn't work out how to log in to her router interface to find the encryption key. We've now managed that.
Although I'm tempted to think that it would have beeen a lot easier just to get a network card at Maplin and all would have been done and dusted a long time ago...No free lunch, and no free laptop

Well I tried connecting again, using alternatively the SSID and the shared key I published above and none works.... it does not tell me why. The wireless icon remains crossed out. But if I were to reboot my problem PC then the icon would appear connected telling me excellent signal, etc. etc....0

The SSID is not relevant to the pass key-the SSID tells you that you are trying to connect to your own network (which I trust you are?).
Think of the SSID as the name/number of your house. That gets you to the front door. Then, you enter the WPA-PSK key (42db...) to get in the door.No free lunch, and no free laptop

PS: when you say, 'none works', please can you be more specific, what is the exact error message, does it say 'incorrect key' or similar? It's what happens when you enter 42db... that we're concerned with, we know it won't work with the SSID entered. No free lunch, and no free laptop
