ethernet adapter?

Sorry Bluboy the thing is it was my husband the one who started the process and I took over now. I did not know he had installed the Belkin but I did not say in my original message I had not installed anything.
I thought it was a matter of getting the Wi Fi cable into the PC since it does work with a cable and the old broadband -- but for that we have to disconnect the WiFi and cannot connect the laptop.0 -
So the PC has at some point been connected to a router with a cable?Sorry Bluboy the thing is it was my husband the one who started the process and I took over now. I did not know he had installed the Belkin but I did not say in my original message I had not installed anything.

If so what type? I thought it didn't have an ethernet port?0 -
I suggest you uninstall the wireless adapter and reinstall it (from the CD that came with it), Then plug it into the PC, and try and connect. It will ask you for the wireless security key which you enter (same as on the laptop-probably WEP or WPA).
If this doesn't work and you need further help then please advise the exact model of your router and adapter -D-Link and Belkin are not sufficient.
Sorry but your sentence about the 'Wi-Fi cable' does not make any sense-please can you rephrase.
NB bluboy: according to Dell support the Dimension 2200 does not have an ethernet port as standard, though of course one may have been fitted aftermarket.
OP, how far from your router is the PC situated? No free lunch, and no free laptop

If the Belkin is detecting wireless networks there's no need to uninstall/reinstall. Its just a matter of connecting and entering the key.I suggest you uninstall the wireless adapter and reinstall it (from the CD that came with it), Then plug it into the PC, and try and connect. But from the OP's last post its possible they had the PC connected with a cable somehow anyway!0 -
Mac: It is very near, and the Wi Fi router has a yellow cable (the one with ethernet connection) which we are not using because the laptop does not need it and the PC has no such port. Tomorrow I'll try what you suggest and come back to you. Thanks!
Bluboy: Before we acquired Wi Fi we had normal broadband and it is connected with a cable (not ethernet, USB) that is what my PC had before and what I could still use.0 -
So where the message popped up (taskbar - bottom right of the screen) you should have a network or wireless icon. If you double click on that you should get a box open up with an option to 'View Wireless Networks'. Click on that and you'll get a list showing yours and your neighbours' networks.
Double click on your one and it should ask for the Security (WAP/WEP) key (which I'm sure you've got written down from when you set up the laptop!!?).
Enter the key and you should be away. If not let us know.0 -
OK try and connect with the wireless adapter again as advised by bluboy, no reason why it should not work. But with a static PC sat next to the router, wireless has no point whatsoever, it's slower, less reliable and less secure. Long term, your best bet is a tenner at Maplin spent buying a PCI network card, pop that into your PC, plug in the yellow ethernet cable and you'll be connected straight away. Don't use an ethernet to USB adaptor, they are not reliable. Ethernet is the way to go.No free lunch, and no free laptop

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral_Component_InterconnectI do not know what a PCI socket is....

Thanks Codger... that is INSIDE the tower I presume?? Suppose I manage to open it up and slot the card in... I still won't have an ethernet socket to plug the cable....0

The picture is a little bit confusing, the slots will be close to the side of the case.
When you fit the card the socket will stick out through the side of the case.
