Lots of laptops have no ethernet, but wireless. Macbook air for one. If the PC was old, so had no ethernet nor wireless, and was then upgraded with wireless, that'd explain it too.

IF its been upgraded with wireless yes. But an old pc that CAME with wireless and no ethernet ive personally never seen

Be interesting to see what the OP has to say

It wouldn't need the adaptor if it had, would it?

    How dumb are you?

(Which, in case you can't fathom it out, is my point. :) )

Wait a sec here. I point out that it doesn't have ethernet. You point out that it has a USB dongle to provide ethernet. Agreeing with me, but making a pretty pointless statement. I then question you having pointed that out, and I'm the stupid one? :T

I was being mischievous - and you fell for it. :rotfl:

Somehow, I don't think the OP will be buying a MacBook Air to replace the ageing PC, though. :)

    !!!!!!. :) I've not been around for ages, I forgot you were a wind-up merchant. :P

Hello and thanks to you all. My PC is a Dell Dimension 2200 desktop. It has not been upgraded or anything. It has NO ethernet port, I can tell that much. It only has USB ports at the back of the tower. I do not know what a PCI socket is....
We have a D-Link router and my husband was sold a Belkin adaptor. At the bottom of the screen, on the PC, it tells me it is connected to the wireless, excellent signal, etc etc, but the page does not open. I tried the "repair wizard" and apparently it gets stuck with something like the IP address (?)... but it would not be the first time the message you get when things don't work is a default message with nothing to do with the real problem...
    Anyway I am still stuck....

If you have no joy with the above you may need to tell us the model number of your router. It should be marked up somewhere - possibly underneath.

Oh, and what version of Windows is on the PC?

edit - thinking out loud... if this PC is quite old you may not have the same security installed as the router and laptop (WPA?)

Am I right in thinking that in your original post you hadn't installed anything (i.e. the Belkin dongle) but still got messages about detecting wireless networks?

Or did you install the Belkin and THEN get the messages?
