Well said !! I am paid for a 37 hour week but work at least 40 -42 every week which there is no hope of any overtime to cover - I do it because I provide a public service - we are also understaffed and stretched but thats all people on here focus on is the pensions - no wonder they say they wouldn't work in the public sector - its far too much like hard work:p

Many people in the private sector also have to work unpaid overtime. My father was public sector, is now private sector. There is no doubt he works longer hours now. although he also worked very hard in public sector. Both DH and my dad are not paid an hourly wage, but rather a yearly salary. They work til the job is done. I don't know why this gets so tit for tat with private sector people insinuating all public sector are slackers and visa versa?

What people never seem to mention is the lack of double time, the working on christmas eve while every other private sector office worker is enjoying time with their family. Working boxing day, christmas day etc, at normal wage.

Do you think that no one in the private sector works over holiday periods? Do you know how water and electricity reaches your home? What about security guards on minimum wage or plumbers, breakdown services, continuous manufacturing processes, buses, trains mini cabs, vicars etc? As for overtime, are you aware that many people in small companies often work weekends and holidays unpaid?

I'm going to really, really enjoy when the squeeze starts hitting the public sector;) . If you guys think it isn't coming, you obviously have no idea what's happening in the UK.

Be smug whilst you can, because the smile will be wiped from your faces, sooner than you think;)

I really don't knowwhat planet you are on if you think the public sector isn't being squeezed. Have you not heard thereis a recruitment freeze in the civil service? The reality of this is that every government dept that I have any contact with are carrying vacancies which they have no chance of being filled but yet people like you still expect exactly the same level of service with between 10-20% less people to do it. Oh and then you moan about inefficiency when we cannot deliver our targets - oh to be you

I wish you all the best in enjoying it then. Fact is, it's already squeezed.

But my examples, father and DH are both 'office workers'. IME your experience is not universal.

As matter of interest Graham, with no mal-intent, do you work part time?

I bet you would love me to say yes, wouldnt you :)

That way you could have a pop about me wasting your tax money :D

Believe me, this happens on every single thread that I get involved in, and although you so no mal-intent, after the numerous times this old chesnut comes up, I know exactly what the intent is.

Unfortunately for me, no, I don't work part time. I'm self employed within the NHS sector and contract myself out. Due to the job I do, I was, last night, posting on here at around 9.30pm, while logged into work remotely, checking a report was running, and then signing it off. I can't run it while people are using the system.

Day before that, I was logged in at 8.30pm, doing the same thing, and running some tools to tidy up the database.

Next weekend, I am in all weekend, while the place is closed, while I have access to the systems, to update them along with a couple of colleagues. And hell, I don't even get paid for that. But will be in all day Sat and Sun.

So sorry, it will be difficult for you to have the pop at me for wasting your taxes. But if it helps, I AM at work now, waiting yet again for a report to run in the background, and at 10, off to a meeting to present this report.

I'm sure I could sweep the floors, or shine a patients shoes or something to stop me posting here, but y'know, I just don't want to :)

Oh, and doctors pay me directly from the pay people were so upset about earlier. Like I said earlier, this is not just their salary, they contract me, as a partnership, directly from their own wages and I invoice them. Therefore, although I do do jobs directly for the NHS, I'm mostly employed by self employed contractors (GP's) for the NHS.

I may add also, that I have very limited access to the NHS pension. I'm "on the books" just 2 days a week, and you will find I don't post on certain days of the week very much at all in the day. Theres a reason for this, it's not my time. If you would like to check I'm not wasting your taxes, you could start a diary to see which days I post on. You'll find theres a pattern. Usually 2 days missing in the week.

I really don't have mal intent. I'm a rare beast here, and have bull and bear board chums, and I think thats because while I disagree I'm not fond of being intentionally rude or making personal comments. But actually I was thinking being a part time worker would bode better, explaining your postings. (I don't work, which is how I have time to post a lot :)). But you know, if I were the type to 'have a pop' even then I don't think I'd be needing to.:confused:

ETA: re your work times, incidently, D was in the office, as a private office worker, till after 1am, and is at work, this morning at 8;15am for an outreach programme. Its those wonderful regular private sector office hours ;)

33k for a police officer, who has gone through training (unpaid I might add to start with). Seems fair to me. Wouldn't even buy you a 2 bed starter home in most places. Plus unsociable hours? The harm they could come to?

Well that's a bit of a volte face - a few posts previously you were saying that you didn't think they were paid enough !!!

The pension - to provide the equivalent of half pay pension after 35 years on final salary basis would require funding contributions well in excess of 35% pa.(that assumes no promotions - which would add to the cost). As police pay pension contribs of up to 11% (I think) then taxpayer will have to stump up other 24%.

Including pension - a basic PC salary package (after 9 years) would be worth £41,000pa
