The Sun £20 Holidays. Holiday Park Review thread

  • We booked this last year and I upgraded to silver acomodation. It was so horrible that we only stayed one night and went home the next day. The chalets were concrete blocks with all cracked paving slabs. The place stank of dog, the sheets were so small they didn't fit the beds and were horrible and bobbly. The swimming pool was closed, the ball-pit was dirty, the staff couldn't care less. I wouldn't stay there again if they paid me.

Have been to Hendra Holiday Park in Newquay for the last two years. Overall, good park and would recommend. It's a little way out of town and the beaches, so you have to drive or get the bus into town. First visit we got a very nice (upgraded) van at the end of a drive, next to the (empty) "Rally Field", good weather, had a great time. Went back last year and got the basic accomodation (which to be fair was all we paid for) - van perfectly adequate, clean and warm, but was in a regimented row where there wasn't room to sit out and bbq, and with very close parallel neighbours who were very very noisy. The park management wouldn't come and ask them to be quiet after midnight so that did spoil our stay a bit. Pool very good, but popular and open to non-residents as well, be warned numbers are controlled (a good thing) so we had to stand outside queing to get in on our second visit. If you plan to use the pool, it's worth buying the ents passes, btw, as there is a charge for the pool, which is discounted with the passes. My kids enjoyed the kids clubs and activites laid on too (kids club soft play for the younger one, junk modelling for the 6 year old). They also enjoyed the morning (land)train with the hippos (don't ask - but you will be up early) and early evening kids disco.

  • I have been on several of the sun holidays my favourites were:
Parkdean Crantock Beach - This is near Newquay, amazing caravan - best I have ever stayed in (didnt upgrade) and right next to a beautiful beach.
Parkdean Warmwell - Really pretty site, had a small wildlife walk where I saw a deer, had a dry ski slope and was close to Weymouth

i've just booked a holiday to warmwell through the sun what was your accomodation like? are they all detached lodges there?
  • We stayed at Cherry Tree last year for our first Sun holiday and was very impressed. Caravan was up-to-date, clean and had a microwave. Site was also clean and my 3 yr olds enjoyed the entertainment. Bit disappointed with the pools (from a kids point of view) but overall very good and have booked direct this year. Plenty to see and visit in the area too.
  • Going to Golden Sands this June - anyone got any feedback on the accommodation wondering whether to upgrade or not (although you dont get a microwave unless you upgrade and with young kids its a must)

Is that Golden Sands, North Wales?

If so, you will have a fantastic time, however, one word of advice - DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO BUY A CARAVAN THERE. The Sales staff will use phrases like "living the dream" etc, but do not be tempted.

If you wish to know more, please let me know!

Thanks for the tip, we are going to Mablethorpe but I will stay clear of the salespeople!
  • Just a word of warning, when you book your £9.50 holiday, the holiday is not paid for until you pay the balance!! (and you won't necessarily receive a letter to pay the remaining balance).

We booked a holiday in Sep 09 for a stay in April 2010. I received a letter on 16th March to say there was an outstanding balance, which to be honest I was surprised at as I thought it was all done and paid for, just rang them up to pay this outstanding balance only to be told that they have cancelled the holiday on 15th March. Great. They are keeping my £38 too and there seems to be nothing I can do.

I'm just more annoyed that we have booked time off work around the holiday, re-arranged on call rotas and even told the kids we are going. Certainly won't be doing one of these 'bargain' holidays again.

I wish people would do their homework and read all the details before booking!!
instead of whinging about it afterwards!

You pay the £9.50 / £15 per person to THE SUN upon booking, either online or postal method

and then all the extras, are payable to the SITE and they will send you confirmation with a date to pay the balance

all of which info is in the SUN pullout and on all the forms / online and in the paper

Of course it's your fault if you fail to pay the balance, surely you read that there were charges payable to the site when you booked?!!
