I've been to one of these a few years ago when my daughter was 3, but what I don't understand is why do they call them 'family holidays' when they usually exclude school holidays, so unless you take your children out of school you can't use them! Surely this defeats the object!

They DO include school holidays !

In the past 3 years we have done ....

may & oct half terms ( they also offer easter and feb half term)

and doing a 3 night dec break, when they break up for xmas

also done 2 summer holiday ones, aug bank hol and end July

I went to Haven camp at Pwhelli and found the same thing. "power charges" then "High season supplement charge" then £38 "entertainment passes"; "linen charges" etc. Upon arrival we learnt that we were called "The Sun People" who were all herded into just one area of the chalet blocks. Obviously, it was the most run down area because the chalet was so vandalised, dilapidated and STUNK so bad we had to leave early...couldn't stand it a minute longer. We've since heard that Pwhelli chalets are becoming generally well known for this sub-standard accomodation....

Maybe a caravan would have been better but be warned about this location!! Never again for us.....all the more surprising that I've stayed at Haven before and found them ok then.

I totally agree with rays1. We had the worst experience of any holiday ever at Haven Hafan y Mor (Pwhelli). For anybody who has seen the 'Colditz' TV series that's what we felt like - the dispossesed, herded into the back and beyond of the site - unsure of what the future held. The chalet blocks hadn't seen any serious maintenance in many a year - even a lick of paint would have been nice. Crivens, if they'd given me the tin I'd have done it meself!

Our 'chalet' continually stank of stale urine (and, no it wasn't ours) despite my wife's attempts to deep clean the place, but unbeknownst to the plucky northern lass she was fighting insuperable odds. The carpet was suspiciously sticky, reminding me of a students union bar floor and prompting us to order the kids to stay on the similarly slimy furniture with a quilt cover laid over. The shower smelt of raw sewage - so naturally we didn't use it. I could hardly breathe at night because of the thick layer of dust coating everything. We only didn't complain because my wife felt sorry for the cleaners.

One day to get out from our depressing H block we decided to check out the 'convenient beach' - to get to this the unwitting campers have to pass the site sewage plant and a large valve that runs into the sea marked 'SEA OUTLET' (or words to that effect). Needless to say we didn't fancy a dip! The camp pool wasn't much better, again looking suspiciously shabby both inside and out.

The place did show attempts to update here & there (a Starbucks) but our Hafan y Mor accomodation just shows the depths holidaying humanity can sink to. Hi-de-hi meets Nighmare Before Christmas. You have been warned pilgrims - I'm still having flashbacks!

The whole thing did put us off Haven 'the brand' so we avoided them for our next holiday & chose Park Holidays Riviera Bay - compact & bijou chalet but quite clean & nice with a view of the bay. Pool, again compact & bijou but nice & clean. Local shop peopled by grudging staff apparently waiting for their call to stardom from 'Britain's Got Talent'. The WIFI on site is FREE, people! Just pop into the brasserie for a cuppa and a bourbon and you can surf it up to your heart's content.

Suckers for punishment that we are we're soon heading off the the Isle of Wight on a Sun holiday - this correspondent will report back soon...

We went to the Bunn Caravan Park at Selsey with a Sun holiday at Easter, even with the update and passes, it didn't top £100!! Recommend it, lovely park, clean with fantasticity friendly staff, who really couldn't do enough for us, food a bit mass catering (but too lazy to cook so hey ho!!) I had to complain once about slighty 'off' bacon, and the manager nearly wet himself trying to make it okay for me!! Will go again, even if I can't get it on a Sun deal!!
:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:

Don't say that! The kids had a great time when we went there at spring half term - the caravan was OK, and the site wasn't too bad (although I'd balk at paying more than £9.50 each!). Towyn is the pits, but Rhyl and Llandudno aren't too far away. Conway is nice too, if you can find somewhere to park! But Ty Mawr is definately not somewhere to be if you don't have transport.

I've been to Thorpe Park, which was nice, and Kiln Park which was great, but mostly because Tenby is so nice I think. I doubt if either of these would seem the same if they were stuck in Towyn.

I love Sun holidays - I think I've got a bargain for £38 then spend about £300 on petrol, eating out and entertainment!
• Thankyou for this as i was looking forward to going to ty mawr and then read the reviews and was dreading it. Would you have paid the extra money to upgrade and are the entertainment passes worth it. I was going to just use it as a base to tour the area and see conwy castle etc
• Hi. Can anyone help I have only 5 SUN holiday vouchers as I kept forgetting to buy the paper. Does anyone know where I can get the rest?

I did buy the passes (although took my own bedding) as the boys wanted to use the swiming pool. Wouldn't bother with an upgrade, rather spend the cash on treats off-site I think.

Been on a few holidays, alwasy pick haven sites. But last three years been to Butlins, never had any problems. cancelled passes as dont want to go to evening entertainment/fair /pool etc. whole holiday accomadation cost £74 pound something. Use it as base for short girly holiday with mum and sister fantastic time. Good with kids even if have to pay for passes (£10 each, can get that back by going swimming daily with kids) cheap way to have a butlins holiday. Always had good accomadation.

Hi all, we've just returned from Haven Littlesea which we recommend as it was very good, all the staff were friendly and approachable including the security guys who were cheerful and went out of their way to join in with the holiday spirit. Accommodation clean, Starbucks and 'Mash and Barrell' onsite. dd (5) enjoyed the Kids' Clubs, gold stars to the Funstars who coped brilliantly with over 60 kids attending Annabel Karmel's kitchen challenge. They had a Halloween night on the Thursday and it was great! Sorry to gush but it really did exceed our expectations. We've been to Haven Devon Cliffs twice and enjoyed both visits, loads of facilities and the spa is a bonus.
