I got charged £30 in January for going 10p over my overdraft. I phoned up the Bank of Scotland and was told that because the charge had already went through there was nothing that they could do. However, as I was due to get an other £26 charge on top of that as I had went over agreed overdraft they would not apply that charge. They made it sound as if they were doing me a favour.

I then found this thread about unlawful bank charges and thought that I would try and get the £30 back. This morning I have received a letter back from Bank of Scotland stating that they clearly outline their charging policy in their T&C's but as a gesture of goodwill they are willing to refund the charges.

I am delighted that I am getting the money back, but have to laugh at the bank saying that it is a gesture of goodwill.

They use the Term 'Gesture of Goodwill' as it can't be used in a court case as part of you trying to claim back any charges.

If they didn't say that they would probably word it like this:
Thanks for your letters requesting full payment, however, we can give you £x amount back but not the rest because where tight.

Hi, I wrote to Halifax & First Direct a few weeks ago after calculating the Charges !!! asking for my money back, to my surprise (NOT) they didn't want to give them to me. So after following advice from this wonderful site I made a "money claim online" and surprise surprise a letter from First Direct's solicitors today not acknowledging fault but nevertheless offering me my money. Yipppeeee. So hopefully I shall here from Halifax too with the same result. I just wanted to say to everyone thinking of doing this, DO. I was unsure as I had to pay £120 to claim through the court but I am so glad I did as over £1300 is winging it's way to me.

Has anyone had any success getting back bank charges from Natwest?

I sent the 1st letter, requesting them back, but got a reply saying "we think charges are fair yadda yadda". Since then have had 2 letters with 2 x Charges, so waiting until this months charge has been applied to file online for money. Is this the right thing to do??

I went into the Halifax today and asked for all my statements - i was told it would cost £10 per statement. This would mean it would cost me £540 to get 4 and a half years statements.
I was under the impression that it would be a one off cost of £10. Is this right?

You have to request the statements under the DPA( Data Protection Act) and in Writing.
  • I am trying to persuade my son to claim back his Bank Charges, but someone put him off by saying they could ask him to close his account, could that happen

Affraid yes they can do this....they can also do it @ anytime. even without you taking any kind of complaint out against them

If you don't ask, you don't find out!
  • Hi, I`m getting cold feet about this now, Halifax has said they will refund SOME charges but, on the understanding that I sign an agreement not to do it again! while I realise this is a bluff, I have a £2000 overdraft, and they are threatening to close the account! Eek! Any advice would be welcome, Thanks.
