Arial upgrade for freeview

I have been told that to access Freeview in my area, I will need an arial upgrade. Sure enough, when I checked a freeview box on my tv it doesn't receive a signal. Can anyone recommend the best place to go and how much it will cost?

It will probably cost you £100+ for a new aerial, but before you do anything else check that freeview is actually available to you at http://www.freeview.co.uk/

Best to check with the neighbours about a reputable aerial installer, or you might consider its just as cheap to get freesat from Sky at £150 all in.

I was quoted over £150.00 to install an aerial when we moved into our new house. A quick trip tp B & Q found a wideband aerial for approx £40.00.
Installed it in the loft myself, linked up to 4 TV's (3 running Freeview boxes) using a mains powered splitter / booster and all works very well.

Buy the aerial from a reputable source and offer a friend a nice pub meal and beer in return for helping you - should save you a few quid and get you a night out too !

Last year I had a new arial fitted so we could get freeview box. Cost was about £130. However even though our area gets freeview because of exact position of our house we can't get all the channels. If I had known about Sky 'dish only' deal (about £150 I think) I would have gone for that. Friends that have gone this route are really pleased with what they get.

Providing your area will support freeveiw have you tried just to boost the existing signal?



I know of someone who had a similar problem, was quoted £150 for a different Arial, only to find when they fitted a booster Arial amplifier this did the job, around £40 not sure of exact price.:beer:

This is good advice - I am in an area that cannot receive Freeview - but with an amplifier and an aerial placed reasonably high I am able to get most channels and the picture quality is much better than for terrestrial TV through the same aerial.

Ok thanks everyone for the info first of all! Just to explain further, I already have sky installed but I also have a freeview box and wondered if I could use it in my bedroom. Is there any way to link it up to my existing sky dish or what else can I do? You can definitely get freeview in this area but I just need a better arial (or a way to use my sky dish!)

Someone else wanted to do this the other day, you can get a cheap TV-Link from Tesco's or similar that is wired from the RF2 output on your Sky box to the TV in the bedroom, it has a magic eye that then allows you to change the Sky channels remotely.
