Some hospitals are a complete shambles and patients are being killed for the want of basic cleanliness and hygeine
The difficulty is here is tyhat PFI has made the lines of responsibility totally blurred.

A quick google brings up this little beauty as evidence:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/feb/05/health.nhs

An NHS hospital that opened less than five years ago under the government's private finance initiative was censured by health inspectors yesterday for unacceptably poor hygiene.
The Healthcare Commission found soiled commodes, bloodstains on bed rails and thick layers of dust in wards at Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington, Kent. It issued the hospital with an "improvement notice", a rarely-used procedure reserved for the most serious breaches of the government's hygiene code.
The hospital, managed by Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust, contracts out cleaning to ISS Mediclean, a member of the PFI consortium that maintains the establishment on a 33-year contract.
The inspectors could not establish whether responsibility for lapses in hygiene lay with the contractors or hospital staff. They suspected that essential cleaning was not done because everyone thought it was someone else's responsibility.
When are we going to wake up to the disaster of PFI - this country is sleepwalking into total oblivion and paying through the nose for the privilidge.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

it may have only taken him 30 seconds, but i'd prefer it if politicians didn't concern themselves with rubbish like this.

We'd probably be in agreement that the nation's hysteria around this is somewhat confusing and rather misplaced. However, her illness and death is something that a high percentage of the population have been concerned about and I read that it has had quite an effect on the screening rates for certain types of cancer, which can only be a good thing. Is it really that much of an issue that he makes one simple comment about it?

All a mute point really, as in today's modern age it wouldn't matter who you had in power out of thousands of politicians, they would comment on an issue such as this as it's been on the front pages of the red tops for months and no decent PR machine would let the opportunity pass. Brown, Cameron, Clegg or anyone else would have done the same.
  • it may have only taken him 30 seconds, but i'd prefer it if politicians didn't concern themselves with rubbish like this. he's only trying to play off the mass hysteria about the issue to make himself more popular. i don't believe for one second that brown (a) knows who jade goody is; or (b) gives a flying toss about her. it lacks class that he gets involved in this. i don't want to be governed by someone who pretends that he is interested in trivial nonsense, whilst the economy burns.

What we need from politicians are actions, not words. e.g. Cancer detection tests earlier, cervical, colon e.t.c.
Preferably an annual health MOT/MOH each year like Germany has too.
Why in the UK, do cars have an annual MOT and not Humans (MOH) anyway? It's ridiculous!

So, we've reached the end of the day my favourite little cheery cheeky chappy. What news did they bury?

Brown promised to wind down on spin as known under king-of-spin Blair.

I thought his early weeks in office suffered badly from a lack of media management. This latest "Goody" move shows a similar lack of press savvy. In a way, though, I quite like politicians who are bad liars.....(after all, that's what spin is). And Gordon certainly doesn't have a good poker face.

yeah, i suppose you're right, and i expect he's only commenting on it in the first place because some tabloid twit phoned downing street to ask what the prime minister had to say about the death of jade goody - although wouldn't be surprised if the prime minister's response was ready and waiting for his press monkey to read verbatim from his laminated celeb gossip briefing sheet, just below his response if asked if he thinks david beckham should still be in the england squad.

This is not a very smart response. It is not a case of evil versus not evil. It is about the proper use of public funds. Billions are being wasted by the NHS. NHS managers are creating huge armies of unproductive beauracrats and giving themselves salaries of close to £1/3 million. Some hospitals are a complete shambles and patients are being killed for the want of basic cleanliness and hygeine. As for NHS dentists, they are almost impossible to find and then they make huge charges for using white fillings. Doctors earn between £100k and £250k for part time work.

What I find most disturbing is your agressive defense of what amounts to wide scale incompetence, sloppiness and in some cases criminal negligence. The NHS are killing the equivalent of jumbo jets full of people every year. You defense of this scandal is 'we make some patients better'. Do you think people would tolerate an excuse like this from BA if some of their planes were dropping out of the sky every year?

Zagu, I'm afraid this contribution to the debate is not impressive. Reports of problems in the NHS are widespread and serious. It is also clear that NHS staff are plundering the kitty for their own benefit.
There are a number of benefits to working in our Trust, including:
    NHS final salary scheme
    discounted membership to local gyms
    subsidised nurseries
holiday play schemes and wrap around care
    key worker living scheme
access to a range of benefits and discounts.
