Did I really see a headline that Brown is to lead the national mourning for HRH Jade 1st (princess of hearts 2nd)? Not like he has an economic crisis to attend to or anything. Glad to know this country has its priorities right.

Humans are hopeless at quantifying risks, and focus on the very rare but spectacular.
    • NHS bungling has killed far more patients than Islamic terrorists, but we get all excited about the later.
    • Motoring kills far more passengers than going by train, but we hopelessly over-react to the occasional derailment.
    • Family members kills many of their children, but we spend endless time worrying about 'stranger danger'.
Politicians then exploit this irrational behaviour to impose ever more state control over our lives, as 'something must be done!". Actually, one good thing about the depression is that there is no money left to pour ££ millions into reducing the off chance that something quite bad may happen.

Such thought processes are not irrational.
    1. The people might well have died without intervention by the NHS. The comparison should be between the current NHS versus no NHS rather than the current NHS and an idealised one that treats everyone perfectly.
    2. People have more control over road accidents. People prefer risks they are aware of and can mitigate.
    3. Most people know their friends and family aren't abusers, they can be less sure about strangers.

Was I the only cynic suprised there was actually no kate mcann featurette on mothers day on prime time tv?

The state of the economy or them all twice shy must be the reason.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

LOL. Now that is cynical. :) Why did Clifford miss this one?

BTW I wonder what sort of pre-nup "jailbird Jack" Tweed had to sign to ensure he couldn't snort the inheritance.

Why does one issue have to be mutually exclusive at the expense of the other? Anyway, it was just one comment from him that probably took all of 30 seconds.

I agree with Zagu, this forum can be a bit odd at times.

it may have only taken him 30 seconds, but i'd prefer it if politicians didn't concern themselves with rubbish like this. he's only trying to play off the mass hysteria about the issue to make himself more popular. i don't believe for one second that brown (a) knows who jade goody is; or (b) gives a flying toss about her. it lacks class that he gets involved in this. i don't want to be governed by someone who pretends that he is interested in trivial nonsense, whilst the economy burns.

Because it's nothing more than a feeble bodycount assessment. A killed more than B, therefore A is the greater evil? 'Cars killed more than Josef Fritzl, therefore cars are the greater evil.' How daft does that sound?

This is not a very smart response. It is not a case of evil versus not evil. It is about the proper use of public funds. Billions are being wasted by the NHS. NHS managers are creating huge armies of unproductive beauracrats and giving themselves salaries of close to £1/3 million. Some hospitals are a complete shambles and patients are being killed for the want of basic cleanliness and hygeine. As for NHS dentists, they are almost impossible to find and then they make huge charges for using white fillings. Doctors earn between £100k and £250k for part time work.

What I find most disturbing is your agressive defense of what amounts to wide scale incompetence, sloppiness and in some cases criminal negligence. The NHS are killing the equivalent of jumbo jets full of people every year. You defense of this scandal is 'we make some patients better'. Do you think people would tolerate an excuse like this from BA if some of their planes were dropping out of the sky every year?
