whether this intensity of work is allowed on a normal driveway because of safety issues

You are right to have a concern about oil, brake fluid etc getting into drains. There is no reason why it should though if they are careful.

Regarding the "safety", that's up to the owner of the drive to worry about.

btw I've currently got a car up on axle stands that I'm stripping for bits. I pumped all the spare fuel into my neighbour's car for free, that's helped keep them on side.

the forum is about money saving , the guy is probably trying to save a few quid on car repairs by breaking his back and doing it himself ...good luck to him

    Indeed...well said.

I am the neighbour that works on his car when I get the time and my nosy neighbours also like to complain which is a pity for them, if they had something meaningful in thier life then maybe, just maybe they would not interfere in mine !

I've spoken at length to the local council about the compaints from my silly (being polite here) neighbours and the council have no issues at all with me messing about with my car collection so long as any work is not carried out in connection with a business and if the vehicles are all on my driveway / in the garage then what I do with them is of no concern to them or anyone else. All the council ask is that anything noisy is not done late at night or early hours of the morning which is perfectly reasonable.

If excessive fluids from the vehicle are leaking into the drains then speak to the neighbour about it, he'll probably be willing to clean up any mess if asked politely but if that course of action is no good then by all means mention the potential pollution to the council / EPA but oily residues do spill and small amounts should be nothing to worry about.

All very true, pouring oil down a drain is illegal. But small amounts of oil on the ground are often unavoidable, particularly if draining it in strong winds. I suspect the original poster saw a small amount of oil and not the full 4.5 litres from the sump. Also, many cars leak oil anyway - just look in any supermarket car park - it's perfectly legal and MOT passable.

Dunno about that, I have a newish neighbour who decided to service his three trucks and just dumped the oil down the drain. Whilst spiling enough on the road to make life really interesting when I ride my bike out in the morning. That was the last straw TBH.

Now the council have finally taken an interest in this and a number of other activities, the trucks have vanished altogether.

At least the guy on the other side of me keeps his vehicle activities to the side/back of his house and manages not to bother anyone, although we all know full-well he is motor trade and moonlighting. Which is against a whole screed of regs but hey, he is a young guy with a young family and working night and day to give them a good home - Just like most of the other folk in the street had to do at some time. A bit of respect and tolerance works both ways IME.

And this sums up so much in life so nicely. You could replace most of the rules and regs with two simple rules:
    1) Use a bit of common sense and consideration for others
    2) Don't take the p155

Unfortunately the things necessary for rule 1 to work are severely lacking in many people these days, and as for rule 2, well just need to look at our MPs and say no more really.

Personally I wouldn't report the second guy. Everyone struggles to make ends meet when they're down (especially if they have a family to support). Most aim to "go legit" when the situation improves. If they're not harming others then leave them to it. The only people who complain about this are the lucky ones who've never been there

The people who don't have a car themselves (and probably can't afford one) one also like to complain so it happens at both ends!

Sadly many people are bothered by the sight of a car in any other state than it should be while being driven on a road and get all annoyed about nothing, and tiny drips of oil become an entire oil slick. Tipping oil down the drain is clearly wrong though.
