the internet as a whole or just these types of sites.
if its the internet as a whole, you don't use any online systems ie Internet banking etc? at all?
Social networking sites are not banking sites. You need to stop thinking of the internet as some mythical place, and starting thinking of it as you would the "real world".
If you went to a meeting with your bank, you'd expect it to be private. If you went for a drink in pub with your mates, you wouldn't.0 -

Pretty much what Martin J said.
You dont have to give these sites all your personal info. Like you dont have to provide it for here. Dont put anything about yourself on Facebook or bebo or whatever that you wouldnt happily put on a poster and pin to a lampost on your road
E-banking is different. You're using secure systems (costing millions of £'s to run) and large, trusted, regulated companies.0 -
Really want to be able to select "yes" and "who cares", but have to chose...it's a toughie...0

Well, yeah you have a point...
They used to be y'know back in the day. When I had to walk 5 miles in the snow to get to school. Uphill both ways! And this was all fields....*reminices*0 -
Marty J has hit on a really good point, often overlooked. People seem to be happy to put all sorts of personal stuff about themselves online: personal family photos, details of where they live, phone numbers etc. But I bet these people wouldn't put a poster up outside their house with similar details - it's the "real world removal" that electronic communications foster, that opens up some people (who clearly need to think more before clicking 'OK' to everything they see) to be insecure and then get worried when they find it's publically available!
Social networking sites obviously cannot be compared with sites that are secure (or touted as such) such as banking etc. They are designed to network, errrm... socially!0 -

However that is different from putting your information up on a public site for all your friends to see, but not realising everyone else can see it too.0
