Regarding the item itself, I understand that Royal Mail aren't permitted to delivery a recorded delivery item without a signature (either at the door, or by the recipient collecting the item). So even if my buyer is a scammer, either they will get the item (and sign for it) or they will not get the item but with no signature. Either way I find it difficult to see how they could scam me by collecting the item and then not signing for it.

It's not unheard of for some posties to get no answer when knocking for a signature and just leave the parcel anyway. The seller then can't see a signature online so will lose a PP claim for item not received.

Not one of the items I sent recorded in October ever showed as delivered, yet they all arrived. If they had been ebay items (and they weren't) then I would not have been able to defend a paypal chargeback if the buyer had been dodgy.

IMO it raises quite interesting legal points. Just because they say they are not prepared to cover it, it does not mean they are not legally responsible for it if they lose or break it.

Certainly no-one at the post office enquired as to the value of my item or pointed out that I would not be "covered" if it was

    Imagine the following scenario:
You take your car in for a service and repair. It is worth £10,000. The repairers take it for a spin to make sure it's repaired properly. In the process they have a crash and write the vehicle off. In their T&Cs they have stated that they will only be responsible for the first £3,600 of the repair, so they tell you that you just lost £6,400 worth of goods through their carelessness with nothing you can do about it because it was in the T&Cs.

I imagine in that scenario most of us would go ballistic and probably ensure some kind of legal action. Certainly if they said "well you have to pay us an extra £50 in case we trash the car" you wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry. That the repairers are taking fully responsibility for the item you are placing in their care and they if any insurance is needed it is they who have it is a fair assumption to make, and I don't think in those circumstances the car taking his car in for repairs would expect anything to the contrary in the T&Cs.

The post office is IMO exactly the same thing, just scaled down a little. I am just interested to know why they feel they are any different, and also whether anyone has actually questioned the legality of their losing or damaging an item in their care and only repaying part of the cost back.
I am no expert on law and so am probably wrong, just food for thought :)

    you're comparing apples with bananas
i can insure my car against theft using basic cover
if i under insure its value using the wrong policy then i wont get a full payout covering the full value of the car
perhaps RM should demand everyone provides proof of value before accepting packages and charge them a fee on that value.
    thats a much simpler system
what you get with RM is a cheap(yes it is) service that works in the majority of cases
what you get with special delivery is a premium service that works well in excess of 99% of the times

I have no problem at all with RM paying up and i'm not sure how paying an extra 72p from your profit for every item actually helps as the claiming requirements are exactly the same.

the extra 72p , discourages unscrupulous buyers from doing a charge back with paypal , as you have proof of delivery in most cases , which is more important than the claim from RM .
I would be happy to write off the odd package , but is becoming a BIG problem in the last year , with items sent normal post .
ebay must sort this problem , i was paying them over £100 a month over the last 4 years ,, now my latest bill for fees is £4.00 .multiply that up over their users and they will be in trouble .

If you are coming across that level of poor buyers then you really need to recheck your selling model. If there really were that many scammers on ebay we would have all given up years ago, I know I would.

At 72p extra for each item 100 parcels a month would cost me £72 from my profits, I'd have to lose a huge majority of items to make that worthwhile. That doesn't even start to address the vast numbers that are never signed for, just read some of the other threads on here.

I spend 72p per parcel...on about 500 parcels a month, but it's costed into the item price/postage price (depending on whether i'm offering 'free' postage). I personally think it's worthwhile but think it depends entirely upon the item you're selling.

I'm very happy for all my competitors to be charging more for their goods, it's hard enough getting near the top in 'best match' so my goods being 72p cheaper makes a lot of difference to my ranking.
