The only people who need protein shakes are those who have either undergone bariatric surgery or other form of surgery/illness affecting digestibility of food. They are a complete waste of time and money for anybody else. You can obtain sufficient protein via natural sources, i.e. FOOD.

Whilst I usually agree with Chameleon, in this instance I sort of disagree, and need to add.........If you are a vegetarian and training, protein powder is sometimes necessary. I have a client who is this, and finds it extremely difficult to get her required 93-111g daily.

Now, I am no fan of PP - it is still a manufactured, processed product after all - but this http://www.natures-whey.co.uk/product/ignite-ultra-v-mint-chocolate/ is different, not milk or soy based, and one of the best I have seen.

As for mardatha's question, you don't need PP to loose weight, neither will PP help you loose weight - unless you are told to take it inline with other dietary recommendations. Unfortunately PP gets taken without taking the rest of the diet into account, in which case it's pretty pointless and very expensive.

Yes it is part of a diet, protein shakes x 3 and 1 meal a day for 2 weeks. I was just asking generally but it won't matter because I'm going to try it anyway and see :)

Wouldn't it be better just to eat healthy food? The problem I find with these meal replacement diets is that it doesn't teach you to have a healthy relationship with food and is never anything other than a quick fix. Usually once people go back to eating proper food again they tend to regain the weight lost, plus more. It creates the typical yo-yo diet effect which is a cycle many people become trapped in.

It's just to give me a quick start - I don't overeat, it's middle-aged spread getting worse, and I can't burn it off due to ill health :)

Pumpkin seeds are a great source of protein, much better for you :)

What ever you decide to do I hope it works for you long term.

Chameleon is absolutely right. I wouldn't waste your time or money, as soon as you go back to eating proper food, it will go back on again.

In those 2 weeks it will look as if you have lost weight, but it will be water and lean mass - unless you are exercising - it won't be fat. Your metabolism will start to slow and you will burn less calories, which means you will loose less weight.

There is no such thing as middle-aged spread, it's down to poor food choice and lack of exercise. So, if you don't think you overeat, it's probably your food choices that need dealing with. You need to make long-term choices, the body doesn't like short-term fixes.

Well I've started low carbing, gave the protein powder to the husband. I've been doing it since the 15th and have lost 7lbs. My main problem is tea. I can cope with the diet fine, am not hungry - but I usually drink tea all day (no sugar.) I have cut down a lot but can't do without... how do you all cope? The books say there's carbs and sugar in milk. :(
