I've pretty much given up with sugar substitutes. They either taste wrong or don't work the same way or are really no better for us than sugar anyway. I have splenda, stevia and various others but generally manage my sugar consumption by not eating sweets/cakes etc LOLEat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Spoke to mr el about the amount I carbs etc in the ones he likes so we are going to try the black farmer ones and see if he can get " used" to them
Was doing really good today till I had to take my medicine, the medicine was really really sweet ( horribly so tbh) but that started me one the whole sugar thing ... One mars bar two cups of hot chocolate with sugar and three biscuits later finally it was gone
I really and honestly so hate how this happens to me but try as I do ( and believe me I try and try and try) I just can't stop it when it starts ... Don't want to have to take the medicine again0 -
Have copied down the almond and coconut recipes in the desperate bid to try to tackle this ... I don't like stevia etc though so not sure how to work that into a palatable thing0

Hi Elantan, 90% or 85% chocolate often works for me when I get sugar cravings. Or raspberries blended with ground almonds - I keep some in the freezer for emergencies.
Coconut and ground almonds are quite sweet on their own once you get used to them and I sometimes find the tiniest bit of stevia can make a difference to the flavour without actually being able to taste it. I have used this in for example a strawberry mousse or a lemon coconut pie.
Oh and plain yogurt sometimes works for me.0 -
Hi Kafka ... I have tried the real dark chocolate in the past but it didn't help sadly, however I havn't tried the other things, so I will deff give them a go thanks ... I will need to have something handy for when it strikes so that I can deal with it effectively as it is literally ruining my life and I am so so so so fed up with it0

Have you tried melting dark chocolate with coconut oil and stirring in hazelnuts, then leaving to set in the fridge. Very moreish and requires no sweetening0
-
No Sheila I havn't tried that either ... That may also work thanks ... I'm so glad I asked now0

A pleasure but I think that I got the idea last year from someone else. That is what this board is all about, sharing ideas and helping each other
Make sure that it is pure virgin coconut oil if you don't already have some, more expensive but infinitely better for you.0 -
Hello all
I've had a fairly difficult couple of weeks but my resolve has been good and I haven't strayed too far. First week was a wedding that I had to travel to and stay for two nights. Booked a Pr*mier !nn which turned out to be miles from anywhere and as I hadn't taken the car I more or less lived on bunless beef(?)burgers. At the beginning of this week my father was rushed in to hospital (I'm his carer) and I've been back and for there every day. Too exhausted to cook much but then scrambled eggs don't take long and have been my staple food this week. As usual I've eaten too much fruit but have tried to eat berries rather than pears and mangoes - my favourites. And too much yogurt though I'm really cutting down on that.
As my dad came home today I want to get back to preparing new things and maybe doing some baking. I cooked liver last week because I know it's highly nutritious, but it was a real struggle to get it down. There's a lovely(ish) recipe on marksdailyapple for chicken liver pate so I'll try making it and maybe it'll go well with the GG crispbread that's often mentioned here. Normally I buy organic meat but I found 4 packs of chicken livers in Mr T's at half price so if I hate the result I haven't wasted too many pennies.
My weight has been up and down over the last 3+ weeks but generally downwards with quite a drop a few days ago. So altogether I've lost 8lbs which I'm really happy with. I can't believe how easy I'm finding this way of eating and how excited I feel about the whole thing. My mood is much better, I feel more positive and although I daren't hope too much, my joints are less painful. There's been small improvements all round which is unsurprising given the appalling way I've eaten over many years. I've starved myself of protein, used very little fats of any kind and same with sugar. But I drank loads of diet Pepsi and low cal hot choc, and ate pounds of fruit and zero fat Greek yogurt. I couldn't understand why I couldn't shift my weight and now, having read up on the science, I do.
This thread is very inspirational and I'm picking up lots of tips from you all, thank you.0
