Eat carbs if you want to be able to burn fat.

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_'fat_burns_in_a_carbohydrate_flame'_mean

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/81636-fat-burning-process/

So what does all of this mean? Because carbohydrate sources are limited within the body, if a person consistently limits their intake of carbohydrates, they are much more likely to "hit the wall" and be unable to generate energy for movement from their fat sources, despite the limitless supply!

Especially if a person is starting (or maintaining) an exercise program, it is important to consistently consume high-quality carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, & whole grains) in order to ensure the body confinues to effectively burn both fats and carbs for energy.

All fine, if you eat carbs, but as most of us here don't, Daska's book reference is much more relevant, and as its in my possession, I can confirm Daska's recommendation.

Perhaps the ones who don't and wish to lose some fat should do so. It's science, not fantasy written to sell a book.

    Hi everyone.

I have just found this thread. I have been unwell for some time now and my doctor has told me to cut carbs out of my diet. I have had bloods taken and am waiting for the results.

The doctor told me to only use skimmed milk and cut out all fruit in my diet. She said to do stage 1 Atkins. Only I don't eat eggs or cheese and am starting to get a little bored.

I am going to go through all the recipes that Mercy compiled, but at a quick glance a lot of them rely on the things I do not eat.

At present I am living on meat/tuna and vegetables. I am not hungry at all just a bit bored.

Hope to find some inspiration on here.
Sweet baked potato with home made coleslaw.

    Salmon steak with cauliflower fritter.

Corned beef layer- a layer of corned beef, layer of onion, layer of thin sliced swede, repeat layers . Add a cup full of marigold boullion and cook on low heat for two hours.

Spicy chicken- coat with gg cracker blitzed with chilli powder and fry serve with cauli rice or a salad.

The choices are endless really :j

That hasn't happend to me Cleggy. I've eaten low carb for almost 18 months, never had weight to really lose, work a lot of hours and hike most days.

My family wish I had less energy :D

    Thanks pink princess.

The problem is, the doctor didn't tell me what I could eat, only what I couldn't.

I had no idea I could eat corned beef or sweet potato. I assumed they had carbs in them.

Just being able to eat those 2 items nearly doubles what I have been having.

I have been using this site to tell me what I can eat. And neither of those are on there.

Thanks to Daska and Murphy Dog for that book recommendation. It might be worth me getting that, to make sure I'm setting myself up in the best way possible. Training in the pool is one thing, but the event I'll be doing is in a lake so I don't want to drown! Have done the same event in previous years so I know I can do it, but having noticed that my progress seems a little slower and harder this time I figured my diet may be having an impact.

Had cauliflower mash tonight for the first time, been meaning to try for ages as I know lots of people rate it - it was delicious!

Pink princess, the sweet baked potato with coleslaw sounds lovely I will try that next :)

LOL yes, corned beef has no corn in it, it's cured with 'corns' of salt so it's absolutely fine.

Sweet potato is not as high carb as regular potato but it's considered an unsuitable food until phase 3 - 100g would take you over your total carb allowance for the day on phase 1. Watch out also that some vegetables have a higher carb count when cooked.

    You might find this useful:
    http://www.atkins.com/getattachment/Program/Carb-Counter/2013CarbCounter.pdf.aspx

But I'd suggest getting hold of one of his books, they're often to be found in charity shops so you may be able to pick one up for not a lot. Once you understand the principles better you may find it easier to identify foods that fit.

What do you like to eat?

Re the switch to skimmed milk - that's higher carb than cream, do you have a problem with fat (e.g. gall bladder)?

I am not a great cook. We eat quite plain food.(well we used to)

I have not eaten bread or pasta for about 5 years due to having IBS.

Normally I would cook the following over the course of week.

Sweet and Sour Chicken and Rice
    Chicken/Chop, Mash, Veg/Beans
Fish in batter with Oven Chips
    Roast Anything :)
Jacket Potato with topping and salad
Spag Bol ( I have[had] Jacket Potato/Rice instead of Pasta)

I love all soup except tomato. I also eat a lot of salad.

Tonight I had tuna in soya sauce with salad.
