margaretclare - I agree as I have also tried most diets but sticking to low carb is the only thing that worked. I can't say that I will never eat a potato as the occasional small new potato is a welcome change but I allow for it. You are better than me as I was nearly 20 stone last June and offered gastric banding but I have lost over 6 stone low carbing and it really makes a difference. BMI 34 so want to get below 30, if I can which means losing another 1 stone 8 lb.
Very well done. I am very glad I never got to 20 stone, I'm not even 5 ft tall and would have been like a little barrel rolling along, if I could move at all. My stepdaughter got to about that, though, and she has lost 9 stone by doing SW. She tried to explain it to me but I couldn't get my head around it. As I said, I've 'looked at' many of the weight loss systems so far invented!

I know what you mean as exercise is uncomfortable when you first start and you need to ease yourself into it until you have built up some stamina. I started with 10 minutes a day and then increased gradually. I am still far from fit but I can walk for 2 miles now without hurting. murphydog999 would tell you more, I am sure, but don't do the exercise video without warming up first and only do a little please as we can't have you crocking up. Why I say this I don't know as you are not stupid but I have gone at it for too long and paid the price!!

Many years ago when I went swimming I was able to do 2 lengths (q small pool) without batting an eyelid (first time I went). Thursday - even after 3 when I'd remembered how to do it - I had to rest after each one. Did 12 this time, did 20 on the last first time.
What I did notice was that a few years ago when I swam I would rest because I was out of breath and panting. On Thursday i had to rest because my arms hurt.see that's not smokin for ya :beer: (but does show a shameful lack of fitness
)
I also know that my body will adapt very quickly. Next Thursday I can see me doing 18 lengths without a prob in my allotted half hour. This will be in part due to my regained confidence, partly because the body does respond well to this kind of thing. (almost like it WANTS to get fit - weird)
The best bit about hurting all over is that I've exercised all over then haven't I?! :j
Off shopping for the afternoon. If the weather holds I'll be walking (about 2 miles) That should warm me up a bit and stop feeling need for a zimmer after the 1st 500 yards
Also, the zumba dvds I have start with a 'learn the steps' one. I will be fine doing that as it'll likely take me ages to master them :rotfl:

Thanks hunni! glad that I'm only just now noticing the weight gain. Means I'm keeping it at bay till now by the way I eatI've not replaced the addiction by food - I've not replaced the addiction at all really :rotfl: By using E-cigs I still get nicotine but not carcinogens. My use of the e-cig is getting less too. Quite without effort. Now that's nice.
Green tea hasn't made me show 'Equine behaviour' either lol. Although that would be hard to judge as I !!!! like horse as a matter of course :rotfl: Been drinking it mostly at work for 6 months or so. May have made a difference at first but I can't remember. Also. I use the same T bag all morn and treat myself to a new one at lunch time. :money:

I think that the problem that I had with green tea was that it made me buzz, so to speak.. Is there a lot of caffeine in it? I can't drink more than 2 cups of tea and 2 cups of coffee a day without feeling bad so it could be that but it is really good for you, I know. More coffee also seems to give me bad stomach problems anyway.

Edwardia - I try to eat well and using organic produce, especially chicken and meat, but it is good to know the offers as I have a limited budget and it is expensive. I don't drive and my local supermarkets are Sainsburys, M&S food and Iceland but I do get to pop into others sometimes, though Asda and Morrisons several miles away. Thanks again as it helps :T
margaretclare - have a good afternoon. I tried Slimming World a while back and it was all about red days and green days depending on what you wanted to eat. Lost a bit but I couldn't have kept to it forever whereas this I can.0 -
Another thread has prompted me to ask this - it follows on from a discussion we had at home last week - since going LC we're eating almost entirely fresh food and my store cupboard is almost empty. I've always aimed to have enough food in the house to take us through any short-term emergencies but what should be in a LC emergency food supply?
I've got some tins of corned beef and oily fish (which I'm not keen on but would eat if really hungry!). What do other LCers have?0 -

Spam lol (it's there for dire emergencies :rotfl:). And tins of minced beef and onions. I also have tins of fish, onion powder, dried herbs and spices, big bag o linseeds, salt and pepper, stock cubes. Plus a freezer full of whoopsed meat including liver - dead cheap and good for you, spinach and cauli.
If you grow stuff you can have salads etc. Keep chickensLearn to ferment foods as having a bucket of sauerkraut or other fermented veg on the go is cheap and fermenting adds value to the food. A little goes a long way.
To be frank, if it is a real emergency you'll eat anything so keep a bag of lentils in too. And tins of tomatoes.
What you need is a chest freezer with 1/2 a sheep and 1/2 a cow in it. That's my dream :rotfl:

I heard my name mentioned earlier, by Madam Sheila.
Re. exercise, if there is one thing you can do for yourself - especially important as you age - if you can't do anything else, it is to keep flexible.
Maintain as much movement though your joints as possible, stretch regularly - esp. after walking.....and exercise, of course - from head to toe. You can devise yourself a simple routine - use the net if you are unsure - keep it written down for reference until you are used to it. Just simple things like
side bends,
twisting at the waist,
arms circles,
knee lifts,
opposite elbow to knee,
cat stretches (on hands and knees, arching and then hollowing the back)
knee bends, really stretching the arms above your head as you raise,
calf stretches with just the balls of your feet on the edge of a stair, touching your toes etc etc.
A couple of balancing exercises will also be good. Simply balancing on one leg for as long as you can (no holding on to anything) and a good old pilates stretch that also works your core, and strengthens the lower back -
on all fours, extend one leg out to hip height point the toes, once stable take your opposite arm straight out in front of you. Pull your tummy in, push your supporting shoulder away from your ear, keep looking at the floor, and hold for 15 seconds if you can, repeat on the other side.
Go through the routine once, then repeat. 5-10 minutes a day should do you.
Balance, flexibility and mobility are the most import attributes you can give your body as it ages. Maintenance of balance will give you confidence, flexibility and mobility will stave off injury, keep you mobile and keep your muscles doing what they should be doing - not wearing away. (Many other good reasons, I don't want to go on!)
The last thing to mention is posture. Always try to walk tall, always be aware of your upper body when you sit, keep your shoulders back and tummy in.0 -

Got the chickens (but they don't lay many eggs over the winter when most emergencies would happen), got the big freezer so that would tied us over (as long as the electricity held up), got the veg plot (again, not so much available over the winter).
Spam - I think I'd rather go hungry!
I suppose some tinned veg, meat and fish is the best standby with a fall-back of non-LC like rice, etc.
What I don't want to do is have non-LC stuff in the cupboard that we have to keep using up to keep it within dates.
The cupboard looks so bare compared to pre-LCing days.0 -
