devildog - watch the Boots scales as they can vary from store to store by 2lb and an inch in height. I was worried as my height had decreased by 2 and a half inches but, when measured the old fashioned way at hospital, it was only 1 and a half. I also know which scale weighs lighter and weigh on that each week now.
Only vary by 2lb
I also called in at the chinese type supermarket today-unplanned trip so didn't have my list with me(not a good idea) Asked about shiritaki noodles(couldn't see any)however as I didn't have my list I asked for shiitake(mushroom) noodles oops. Then asked about the sweet stuff like sugar only sweeter that came from a plant and began with the letter S (lol) the response 'Sugar' lol. Did manage to come away with a bag of ground almonds thoughNote to self-be better organised and take list next time! Also bought 20 pairs of plastic chopsticks(£2.50) bargain. Next time me thinks a bamboo steamer (under £2) The difference in price between there and the likes of the major brand supermarkets has to be seen to be believed. If I wasn't low/no carbing I would have bought rice too(about 1/4 price of Tescos)

devildog - sorry yes. I know that it is disappointing but as long as you stick to weighing on the same scales at least you will see that you are losing. You are doing well0

http://inflammationfactor.com/ the basics are here.
There are also a couple of eating plans whose principles are based on health first (based on inflammatory foods) and the inevitable weight-loss second, they are The Zone, by Barry Sears which is a 40% carb/30% protein/30% fat plan, eating 5x daily, and The Fat Resistance Diet, by Leo Galland MD. He believes that not being able to loose weight is a sign that some basic metabolic mechanisms are not working properly.
His program is all about controlling inflammation, there is a book and I believe a cook-book.[/QUOTE]
Having quickly skimmed this web-site, I'm dismayed that alot of the low carb stuff I've been giving my daughter, may be adding to inflammation, rather than reducing it!!!! I'm so tired now, but tomorrow I'll study it properly and see what I think. I get so fed up that you try to do your best, only to find new information that looks like you got it wrong again!!!
Hope things look brighter for everyone tomorrow. Night night!0 -
evening all...
well done mazzers on 5lb!!
devildog, all scales weigh differently so try and pick one set and stick to them and then you'll be able to see that you're losing. you're doing well, just keep going xx0 -
Good morning all !
I was bad yesterday I got OH to buy me some Cheddar flavour Kettle Chips to cheer me up. I ate them, I enjoyed them.. and then <look away now if eating> I was very sick. My GP says it's psychosomatic but I'm really not convinced. Anyway, knowing that I could be ick will keep me from eating Kettle Chips in future !
sheila54 thank you for the pep talk (((sheila54)))
mazzers well done
murphydog999 thank you for the info I shall read through thoroughly when I have my mid-morning tea break.:)
sweatybetty thank you for the meter website link, I will go look at those when I go shopping with my mother tomorrow.0 -
mazzers well done on the 5lbs and it's great that your doc is so supportive. I've noticed that since I quit eating the processed food (er apart from the Kettle Chips last night) I don'get get heartburn at all and hardly ever get indigestion
marrbett I'm inclined to agree with Dr Galland on the metabolic thing, that's what my doc told me too. There's so much info out there that I tend to disregard stuff that's fairly old. Dr Lustig always says that health information changes as we learn more and what we knnow now will be old hat in ten years. I disregard anything saying low fat is good because I feel it's discredited now and go with new research if it makes sense to me. We can only try to do our best ! xx
Having eaten crisps I admit to being the pot calling the kettle black here, but mentioning no names there's some slacking going on here (pizza) and cheating (dodgy scales) :rotfl:
Pizza Hut does salad so does McDonalds, if you search this thread I did detail the low carb choices in a fair few places and I've done some more for my blog so just PM me if you want a link for the others.0 -

Morning.
Looking on the inflammation website, it looks like blueberries and bacon and mayo are all negative for inflammation, which means its been unhelpful for my dd! Even yogurt appears to be bad!
According to that website, low carbing isn't the issue, its the IF ratings I need to go by!! Aaaaaargh.0 -
sweatybetty sorry you put on 3kg.. that's a lot...
For the benefit of any lurkers who don't know about the role of insulin, it's like a key in the cell door to let the glucose in to provide the cell with energy. So insulin shoves glucose into the cell and if we don't use it all, it gets stored as fat.
The other thing insulin does is control fat as part of the survival mechanism ie it doesn't want to let it get burned. The higher the insulin level the less able we are to lose weight.
So, sweatybetty I'm thinking that if you are taking the same amount of insulin as you were and are eating fewer carbs there's excess insulin sloshing about preventing weight loss. If you've upped your protein too, don't forget that the body can make glucose from protein IIRC a consultant told me 58% of protein ends up as glucose and the insulin could be vacuuming it into your cells as well.
Low carbing with insulin seems a bit trickier. I've got The Diabetes Revolution by Dr Charles V Clark and Maureen Clark. The early part of the book deals with low carbing when using insulin step by step so may be useful. His website is www.charlesvclark.com
Dr Richard Bernstein is the go to guy for low carbing with insulin www.diabetes-book.com and his older website www.diabetes-solution.net plus there's another newer membership one called www.thebernsteinconnection.com It seems that there's a web seminar on May 30 which you may be interested in.
Those books and websites are the best info I can come up with, hope they help xx
Edited to add: marbett I looked at the website and it seems to me that if you eat a low carb diet without processed food of any kind then there's very little that gets below -10 on the mildly inflammatory scale. I looked up yogurt and full fat live Greek yogurt isn't mentioned. The low fat stuff that's inflammatory is also full of fructose. Foods have to be -201 or lower to be strongly inflammatory.0 -

Aaaaaaargh indeed!
Deep breath. Look at this objectively. How about garlic, 215 for a tablespoon (but realistically how much can you actually eat?) - so on balance the positive effect is probably pretty minimal. And raw blueberries are only -15 for half a cup.
One thing we know for certain is that we don't know everything about nutrition. And neither do nutritionists! They thought they did, and then they found something new, and then they thought they did, and then they found something new... etc. Foods aren't single nutrients and while the IF goes some way towards looking at the bigger picture the reality is so complex that we have to accept that we're only even considering the tip of the iceberg. The chances are that in a year or so they'll find yet another group of micro-nutrients and those figures will have to be re-adjusted.
We're omnivores, we're designed to eat little bits of lots of foods. So unless she's eating mainly blueberries I really wouldn't stress about her having some.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
