    On the cholesterol subject........

As time goes on and scientists continue to learn more about heart disease, it has become quite clear over the recent years that inflammation within the body (NOT cholesterol levels) is what causes plaque build up in the arteries and eventual heart disease. Inflammation can be caused by many personal factors such as stress, smoking, viruses, consumption of refined and/or hydrogenated fats (man-made trans fats), an imbalance of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats to omega-3 polyunsaturated fats in the diet, excess refined sugars in the diet, etc.

Another more important test than cholesterol levels for heart disease risk is a test for serum homocysteine levels. The next time your doctor wants you to get blood cholesterol tests, request CRP and homocysteine tests instead. He/she should be well aware of the validity of these tests if they are up to date.

    From this report.

recommending the NHS gives healthy people statins!! Is this April fools day???? I can't believe 'so-called' health professionals would say this - unless paid to do so of course.

coconut flour is less carby but I don't know how it would be at thickening a bechamel. Personally I no longer make a bechamel, for a basic cheese sauce I mix philly, water and grated cheddar (and a bit of mustard powder) but others on here use cream and cheddar. I have a rather yummy book somewhere which has what looks like a good recipe for lasagna - she cooks her 'pasta' sheets out of egg, cream cheese, cream, mozzarella and cheddar and then uses IIRC ricotta and parmesan mix for the non meat layer and then tops off the last sheet with some more bolognese and finishes with grated mozzarella. I'll look it out if you're interested.

Spotted the book in the kitchen and thought I'd post anyway. Serves 8 and she recommends a 13"x9" dish. White layer is
    685g/1.1/2lb ricotta
    2 large eggs
    1/8tsp grated nutmeg
    1/2tsp salt
    60g grated Parmesan
Mix and refrigerate for up to a day

    Noodles as described above

    720ml/26floz Bolognese Sauce

    170g/6oz full-fat mozzarella cheese
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Just reporting back about the duck crown I bought. I cooked it yesterday and it was delicious, both myself and hubby loved it. Only thing is, is it worked out very expensive at £6.85 for one meal.........but at least now I have tried it and know I like it. Next week I will try duck legs as I originlly intended.

I just made 3 scoth eggs, using 2 low carb sausages per egg.....I didn't realise how big they would turn out !!!!! I just ate one for lunch...yummy.

Later I am going to make a crustless quiche and maybe tomorrow a lemon mousse.....I really must have my cooking head on this week.......Tuesday I made celery and blue cheese soup.....yummy.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

confused 76 well done :T let us know what you think of the duck legs ;)

andrewsmum is a duck convert :T In my local Morrisons last Saturday they had run out of the Gressingham duck legs down to 2.65 from 3.15 but they had whole Gressingham ducks for £10 and crowns for £5. I think the offer ended on the 15th though unfortunately. Suggest trying Waitrose and Sainsbury's, not seen them in my local ASDA but they might do in yours ?? Celery and blue cheese soup sounds yummy.

daska what does IIRC mean please ? I know ROTFLMAO, ROTFPIMP, IRL, IYKWIM, LOL (unlike Mr Cameron) and AFAIK but I just can't figure it out .. :o

murphydog999 yes the NHS does try to dish out statins to all. The practice nurse at my GP's surgery has repeatedly told me I should be taking them. In the end I growled at her, saying my cholesterol was excellent. As statins can cause diabetes, I just wondered why the heck she thought I'd want them worsening mine !

She also tried to get me on BP medication because my kidney function test was slightly off but improving and I said no (it's now normal). Got so cheesed off I told doc I wasn't seeing her anymore.

This whole if it helps X people we should put everyone over 40 on it thang is really dangerous IMO - hey another one daska ;) It's healthcare by statistics and as we all know 8 out of 10 cats prefer Whiskas

Erroneous theories were the reason we ended up being told low fat is good and that's not exactly working..

sheila54 letter turned up today saying I have to repeat the liver function test in six weeks. No mention of hepatitis screening so am presuming OK. I've had hep A vaccine and I don't think I'm particularly at risk for others. Will try to get call from doc tomorrow. Thanks for asking. How's you ? xx
