IIRC - if I remember correctly
Has it got to the point where diabetes is considered a normal part of growing older? I was reading yesterday that 1 in 3 children born in the USA in the last 10 years will develop diabetes; with an even higher risk for some subsets. I guess if you look at it from that perspective then refraining from prescribing statins because of the risk of diabetes might seem pretty pointless: "you'll probably get it anyway so why worry..."
I think the phrase you're looking for re low fat is "intuitive hypotheses": eating fat makes you fat, too much cholestererol raises your blood cholesterol etc. All based on "you are what you eat" rather than 'you are what you body makes of what you eat'Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

I heard that about statins. I turned the tv over.
I have lost a bit more, 7.5lb since my return from hol, 2.5weeks ago, so very pleased with that. Must update my sig, but I can't add up in my head anymore so will do it later...
Had my oatbran for breakfast, some smoked sausage and bit of salad for lunch, no idea what's for dinner. I have about 100 frozen chicken breasts so ought to do something chicken based. Hmm, might go have a forage...

ETA oh my goodness me, low carb bounty bites... 35g Bar of diabetic choc (3.5c), dsp coconut oil (0c presumably?) and a tablespoon or two of desiccated coconut (about 0.5c by my reckoning) melt together and spoon into silicone ice cube tray - mine were bear shapes. Delicious! I think they will be even nicer if the coconut is rehydrated, they were a bit crisp. Which was sort of nice. Got a dozen sweets for 4 carbs, so a couple a day as a treat should be just fine.Bossymoo
Away with the fairies :beer:0 -
Edwardia gives stern look to bossymoo and even sterner look to sheila54 whose treats list is getting to look like a meal
Brunch - Two fried eggs and 250g Sainsbury's button mushrooms fried in dripping with leftover runner beans and courgettes from dinner last night.
Drinks - Green tea with vanilla, Earl Grey with Lactofree
thanks daska.. intuitive.. seriously ? I'd call it nonsensical healthcare myself. Evidently if everyone lived to 120 we'd all have diabetes but I assume the diabetes stat of 1 in 3 kids will have diabetes is because so many kids will be hugely fat.
Sorry I can't ever agree with " you'll probably get it anyway so why worry ".. it's devastating to be told that you have this chronic disease and know that your life will never be the same.
I have been told that I can't walk barefoot in my house for example, in case a dog hair gets under my skin which leads to an infection and me having my foot taken off.
Unless people with type 2 diabetes low carb they are on a conveyor belt towards insulin which is not the benign substance it's made out to be.
Diabetes is a degenerative disease meaning that however hard I work at this, I'm only giving myself some respite, there's no cure. I won't live as long as a healthy person without diabetes.
It's frustrating and annoying to be treated like an imbecile and have appointments made for me. To have a nurse twice the size of me lecture me about my diet or grab the fork out of my hand, stir my salad and tell me that I'm not eating enough carbs in front of five members of my family.
No airline is obliged to take me anywhere. I cannot scuba dive, bungee jump, parachute jump or drive a horsebox if I wanted to.
I hate pricking my fingers to monitor my blood glucose because it hurts and I get bruises so typing can be painful.
I hate the assumptions made about me that I must have been stuffing my face with cakes and chocolate.
It's not ' a little bit of sugar ' as my mother in law calls it.
Not meaning to upset anyone at all xx but diabetes is deadly and if you're overweight you should be making every effort to lose weight to try to avoid getting it. The fatter you are the more risk you have of getting diabetes. If you have a lot of stomach fat, that's proof of insulin resistance.0 -
Sorry Edwardia, I didn't for one moment mean to imply it was what how I thought. Only that those who are totally in thrall to big pharma and blind to the evidence that diet is the number 1 culprit and diabetic tendancies can be reversed (as in the australian aboriginal study) might view it that way. I didn't mean to upset you.
And yes, intuitive, as in 'based on what one feels to be true even without conscious reasoning'. i.e. no scentific reason, just belief in what appears obvious. Exactly the same as people who saw the sun rise in the East and set in the West and believed that meant the sun moved around the earth. (in other words: total garbage)Eat food. Not too much. Edwardia - still only 39 net carbs and 1700 cals on fitday.. I only have small amounts of the treat items 15g sesame seeds, 15g flax, 50g yoghurt, 16g almond pancake etc. Trying to up the fibre and cover vitamins and minerals with the diet though I still use supplements as well. I love Maths and find it quite entertaining to balance them by changing what I eat. e.g I bought spinach today to get more pottasium. Sad aren't I?
It is a pity that more of the public don't realise what diabetes means as then, maybe, they would eat sensibly to try to avoid it!! I would have grabbed the fork and used it somewhere unmentionable. Where is the respect?
bossymoo - well done, 7.5lb is good :T0 -
evening all!!! hope you're all well....
thanks for the best wishes everyone...i've dug out a smaller pair of jeans that still fit me :j
Sheila, your menu sounds very nice....
Sistercas, you're doing well with your running! :j
Edwardia, the duck is cooking right now...i was surprised that the duck was cheaper than i was expecting...
Statins have some pretty horrible side effects don't they? I think i'd want to avoid them if i can control it with my diet. Mind you, i'm on migraine medication that has some crappy side effects...
Daska 1 in 3 with diabetes is a terrible statistic, and very sad
Bossymoo....well done on getting 7.5lb off whoohooo :j

i'm really sorry to hear this Edwardia, i didn't realise. How long have you had diabetes? To grab your fork is so incredibly rude :(
I worry so much about my brother, he is a serious over eater and is about 25 stone. I'm scared he'll develop diabetes but he just shuts down and won't talk about it. The good thing is he is having counselling about it at the moment x0 -
Hmm I am one with the stomach fat
Another reason to keep on the straight and narrow! Didn't get to go shopping today so it was back to eggs(+mushrooms) for breakfast, tuna lunch(straight out the can! lazy or what) tea was, well I don't know what you would call it really, a mix of onions, tomatoes, garlic, quorn, courgettes and tinned tomatoes. Tasted ok and was filling.Oh and I was bad and had a packet of crisps
Think I am crashing today, my get up and go has got up and left!! Hope it comes back soon.

devildog - I felt awful with headaches and lethargy when I first started. After a few days my body adjusted to the diet and then I felt so much better and more alert. That is why Atkins suggests that you don't start an exercise programme for the first 2 weeks. Stick with it
I also have stomach fat that is stubbornly refusing to budge!!
confused76 - most medicines have side effects which is why I refuse to take them unless really necessary. I think that sometimes the side effects can be worse than the condition that they are used for myself.
Mercy - are you still floating?0 -
